The real reason to visit Amsterdam this winter? ✨

Amsterdam Light Festival lights up the city with art, light and connection. And here at Die Port van Cleve, we’ve had a thing for light since 1879… 💡

Long before the canals became a canvas for light art, our b**r house was already making headlines with electric light.

In January 1879, the Hulscher brothers installed six ‘Jasper Arc’ lamps at Die Port van Cleve. Electric lighting was still a remarkable novelty, and the new lights attracted visitors from across the Netherlands, including Amsterdam’s mayor and other prominent figures, all eager to witness this new technology for themselves.

Today, this moment in our history lives on in one of the themes of our hotel rooms, inspired by the time when Die Port van Cleve became one of the first bars to feature electric lighting.

And now, almost 150 years later, Amsterdam is lighting up once again.

As an official hotel partner of Amsterdam Light Festival, we’re perfectly placed to discover the artworks along Amsterdam’s canals, whether by boat or on foot. The festival runs from 26 November to 17 January, and tickets are available from today.

Did you know our façade is a national monument? 🏛️✨

Look a little closer and you’ll find the iconic Die Port van Cleve gable stone, our Royal Warrant, and stones gifted by Heineken for our 100th anniversary. Small details, each with a story of their own.

For Open Monumentendag (National Monument day), we’re uncovering some of the stories hidden in our façade. Swipe through, see what you can spot and let us know your favorite! ✨

The Heineken connection even goes further. Our iconic façade was designed by the same architect behind the famous Heineken brewery on Stadhouderskade, now known as the Heineken Experience.

In 1888, Isaac Gosschalk designed the new façade of Die Port van Cleve for the Hulscher brothers. Gosschalk was a friend of Gerard Adriaan Heineken, making the connection between these two iconic Amsterdam landmarks all the more natural.

But the façade holds more stories than you might expect. 👀

The gable stone that inspired our name, still hanging proudly right above the entrance. In our previous post we shared the story behind the discovery of this brick tablet dating from the 15th century😲

It has something to do with medieval castles, a German countess from Cleve and a battle against the Spanish…

This is one of the two stone tablets next to the entrance, which were gifted by none other than Freddie Heineken at the 100th anniversary of Die Port van Cleve. Our long standing relationship with Heineken (as the place where Heineken started brewing b**r) was crowned with these two remarkable tablets, for ever cementing the history that took place here🍺

For the 150th anniversary of Die Port van Cleve, we were granted the title Purveyor to the Royal Household. A prestigious title, reserved for companies with outstanding management, social relevance and that have been in business for at least 100 years👑

Did you know our name, ‘Die Port van Cleve’, comes directly from an old gable stone, depicting a medieval castle in Haarlem? 🏰

When the Hulscher brothers bought the old brewery of Heineken to turn it into a b**r house, they found an old gable stone hidden in the walls. This stone depicts the 15th century castle ‘Huis ter Kleef’ in Haarlem, a city close to Amsterdam, that was destroyed in the 80 years war against the Spanish. It is likely that the stone then traveled to an Amsterdam warehouse at the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, later to be found by the Hulscher brothers.

The castle thanked its name to the countess living there; Margaretha van Cleve, who originally came from the German city of Cleve. Likely is that the gable stone was a gift from her family, hence why the stones inscription has a German ring to it. The stone shows the southern gate of the castle, an angle not often depicted, and possibly hang at the gate as well. Gable stones come from a time before buildings had house numbers, and were used as reference points in the city.

Amazed by their discovery, the Hulscher brothers decided ‘Die Port van Cleve’ was the perfect name for their b**r house. Often called out by newspapers for being unconventional, but also jokingly linked to its success. Under the locals the b**r house became known as ‘De Poort’ or ‘De Poort van Cleef’, as that was easier for the Dutch to say. However, the gable stone featuring the ‘Die Port can Cleve’ inscription is still visible on our facade, right above the entrance.

Our rooms in The Discovery theme are all about how Die Port van Cleve came to be. From the early finding of the gable stone that inspired our name, to the changing of the façade to its iconic Neo-renaissance appearance, even earning a monument status years later.

This theme is often featured in our single rooms, which are perfect for the single traveler, business stays or if you prefer some more privacy from your travel party when coming to Amsterdam.

Today we celebrate the 156th anniversary of Die Port van Cleve🎂

Since 1870, this building has welcomed guests from every walk of life, and this year has been one to remember. We ended 2025 with the grand celebration of our 155th anniversary, where hotel room concerts echoed through the hotel and where we launched our own LEGO brick set. In 2026 we welcomed Bouillon d’Amsterdam and witnessed its success, watched De Blauwe Parade grow into a lively cocktail bar, and opened our doors to the neighbourhood during Open Hotel Week.

Right now, we’re carefully restoring our façade, preserving the wonderful stories of this place for the generations to come.

This year, we’re celebrating a little closer to home. This weekend, our hotel guests can raise a glass to 156 years of history with cake and bubbles on us.

Because after a year like that, some things are simply worth savouring intimately.

Afgelopen weekend mochten wij een bijzondere gast verwelkomen bij Die Port van Cleve🧡

Fien Borremans (12) zet zich in voor stichting Stop Darmkanker en liep afgelopen jaar ook mee met de Antwerp 10 Miles, naast andere acties om geld op te halen voor de stichting. Haar moeder Sanne zet zich net zo hard in, en samen met haar gezin kwam Fien voor een verblijf naar Amsterdam. Hier hebben we hun welverdiend in het zonnetje gezet!

Het gezin verbleef bij Die Port van Cleve, en ‘s avonds werden ze warm ontvangen bij Bouillon d’Amsterdam voor een heerlijk diner.

Samen met Aeon Plaza Hotels vinden we het bijzonder om, samen met partners als Bouillon d’Amsterdam, een steentje te kunnen bijdragen aan een initiatief met zoveel impact. Petje af voor Fien, Sanne en iedereen die zich inzet voor Stopdarmkanker.

Today, on 15/5, we look back at the celebration of our 155th anniversary ✨

An evening where the stories of our historic hotel came to life during an unforgettable evening filled with exclusive hotel room concerts, culinary surprises and hidden experiences throughout the building 🎶

Guests wandered through the hotel discovering performances inspired by different chapters of our history, while our historic bar transformed into a secret bar for the night 🍸

The culinary experience served as a preview of , while a special counting and lottery linked to our famous numbered steaks paid tribute to one of the most iconic traditions in the history of Die Port van Cleve.

The evening also featured the grand reveal of our very own LEGO brick set, inspired by the iconic façade of Die Port van Cleve. Even the goodiebag was designed around the rich history of the hotel, with references to the many stories connected to this special place.

From being home to the very first Heineken brewery, to becoming one of the first bars in Amsterdam with electric lighting, Die Port van Cleve has been part of the city’s story since 1870. Celebrating 155 years surrounded by music, storytelling and so many familiar faces made the night extra special ❤️
