Wittenberg Welcomes... Justin Reid-Ross

For week six, and our final week of our series, Wittenberg Welcomes South African Hockey player Justin Reid-Ross (http://ow.ly/GiA750EJ6uw).

Hailing from Stellenbosch on South Africa’s West Coast, Justin is one of world hockey’s top outfielders and a full South African international. Having started his career in South Africa, Justin moved to the Netherlands in 2010 and has represented Pinoké, Amsterdam and current team Hurley. He has played for his national side since 2006, representing them on 97 occasions.

A natural goal scorer, in 2014/15 he was the Dutch Hoofdklasse’s top marksman while playing for Amsterdam and is also the leading foreign goal scorer in the history of the Dutch league with 185 goals (and still counting).

A devout family man, Justin will be joined at Wittenberg by wife Ashley, kids Ben and Grace, and not forgetting French Bulldog Harvey for the week.

They’ll be giving us an insight into their day jobs and then after work, the family be exploring the sights of Amsterdam with the little ones. We might also get a look into Justin’s training regime to see how he keeps at peak condition.

Wittenberg Welcomes… Tjitze Van Der Dam

This week on Wittenberg Welcomes… we have some culinary delight for you in the shape of award winning chef and culinary coach Tjitze Van Der Dam ().

Since moving to Amsterdam he has held positions at Ron Blaauw Restaurant, Friends of Jacob, INK Hotel, QO and the Waldorf Astoria; working his way up to executive sous chef and leading the kitchen teams.

Now working as a private chef, Tjitze caters for breakfast, lunch or dinner parties for two to 2000 people, explaining all of the dishes he presents and answering any questions guests have.

Outside of the kitchen, Tjitze organises culinary events connecting people within the industry, including 24H Chefs (http://ow.ly/HKkH50ECHSc) – an event that brought 24 Michelin Star chefs together to cook for 24hours to raise money for charity.

Describing himself as out of the box, enthusiastic and full of energy, his down to earth views have led him to really have a passion for Dutch classic cuisine, so much so that he has written the Hollandse Klassiekers AnnoNu (http://ow.ly/nlZk50ECHSe) cookbook.

Checking in on Sunday, Tjitze will be showcasing his culinary skills and creating some wonderful dishes for you to see and will even be getting his daughter involved in the show. The question is whether she will want to bake cookies or make dinner 😉.

So please give a huge Wittenberg welcome to Tjitze Van Der Dam and check out our latest blog for more information (http://ow.ly/Bmoy50ECHSd).

Wittenberg Welcomes... Kyas Art Salon

Week two of our Wittenberg Welcomes… series sees KYAS ART SALON take up residency with us.

Kyas is a leading contemporary art gallery situated in the city heart of Amsterdam overlooking a world heritage canal. It follows the Parisian model of a 19th century Salon d'Art and also exhibits its artists at international art fairs.

It represents a group of both national and international contemporary artists and is creating a unique front line-position within the Amsterdam art scene with a wide array of different events and exhibitions. The gallery’s ambition is to connect different expression forms in an unconventional way, creating dialogues and a platform for emerging and mid-career artists.

Representing Kyas for the week will be Dutch artist Rinus Van Hall (http://ow.ly/FAjQ50Em6ri). Rinus is a young Dutch artist, from a well-known artist family, that started his career with classical oil painting but is now challenging himself to become multidisciplinary.

One of his most well-known contemporary works Wake Me Up When I'm Famous became an international sensation and with his work, Rinus is always looking for contemporary societal processes and tries to stimulate discussion. His classical oil paintings have been exhibited at the Rijksmuseum and Frans Halssmuseum and with his latest series of paintings he has exhibited at multiple international art fairs, including Basel, New York, and San Fransisco.

During his residency Rinus will be bringing his portraiture to Wittenberg and will turn one of our rooms into his personal studio.
So please welcome Kyas Art Salon and Rinus Van Hall to Wittenberg and for more information check out our latest blog:

Wittenberg Welcomes... PLANTMOM

To kick off our Wittenberg Welcomes… series we’re spreading the joy of plants with West Amsterdam’s very own PLANTMOM - Monai Nailah McCullough.

Plant lover and horticulturalist from New York City, with almost a decade of experience with caring for indoor plants, Monai blends her passion and business. Her goal is to use design and education to make plant ownership more sustainable and plant owners more confident, with a focus on urban environments in metropolitan cities across the world.

Monai’s work is helping to inspire the people of Amsterdam to bring more plants into their lives and ensure they are choosing the best plants for their home, as well as giving them the tools to care for their plants in the right manner. She’s a great believer in the power of plants, reducing stress and increasing productivity.

In 2020 Monai opened Planthood (http://ow.ly/jnrG50Egv6X), a service-based retail space in Amsterdam selling plants, plant care products. It’s a space dedicated to helping people find the right plants for them, as well as acting as a venue for her Plantmom workshops, of which there’s a ever-growing community. Her regular workshops include meditation, yoga and nutrition on top of her plant care work. Members of the Planthood community receive weekly discounts, online consultations, and personal plant profiles.

Over the next few days Monai will be doing a full takeover of one of our apartments, bringing a forest of her plant pals with her. She’ll be giving you all the plant care tips you need to keep your flora flourishing.

So please tune in to our social channels and welcome Plantmom to Wittenberg.
