With just 10 days to go until WorldPride arrives in Amsterdam, it’s the perfect time to discover the stories that helped shape the city.
From being the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage to creating spaces where the LGBTQIA+ community could gather, celebrate, and be themselves, Amsterdam has long been a place of openness and progress.

Set along the Keizersgracht, the Homomonument was the world’s first memorial dedicated to LGBTQIA+ people.
Unveiled in 1987, its three pink triangles honour the past, reflect on the present.
Today, it’s a peaceful place to pause by the canal, reflect on the stories that shaped the community, and honour those who came before, through the flowers that continue to be laid there.

Tucked away on the Zeedijk, Café ’t Mandje is a place with a remarkable story. Opened by Bet van Beeren in 1927, the café became a welcoming haven for Amsterdam’s q***r community long before acceptance was commonplace.
Today, it remains a vibrant symbol of courage, authenticity, and belonging.

Colourful, lively, and always full of energy, Reguliersdwarsstraat has been at the heart of Amsterdam’s LGBTQIA+ scene since the 1980s.
With its mix of bars, restaurants, and nightlife, the street continues to bring people together and celebrate diversity in all its forms.

At Amsterdam City Hall, history was made on 1 April 2001 when the world’s first legal same-sex marriages took place just after midnight.
A landmark moment for love, equality, and the city itself, it marked the Netherlands as the first country to legalise same-sex marriage.
