After having backpacked and lived in Asia for five years, I decided to return to my roots and start a much needed hostel in Giethoorn with my Chinese-Indonesian partner.

It's that time of year when the flowers demand to be admired.

Yes, summer is great for exploring Giethoorn. You get to soak up the sun while gliding over the water. You can swim in the Bovenwijde, after which you relax and have a barbecue in our garden.

But this time of year, the waters are tranquil. The clear night skies flaunt their stars like diamond jewelry. The deer reclaim our gardens.

The village goes into hibernation, as do we. We'll only be open for a few more days this year. After that, we'll see you when the flowers demand to be admired in spring.

And meanwhile, we'll share some of Giethoorn's fall and winter beauty here.
