My café and 2 patio's are open for locals and guests. The mixture of locals, families, backpackers, young and old give me a smile.

I’m a real Haarlem local, born and raised. I’ve wrote all my life; lyrics, musicals, columns. I had a few loves in my life. I loved being on the wide open sea and arriving at new harbors for the first time on my Urker Kotter de Jonge Jacob. You can still take my boat for a trip. I traveled and wrote a story I really loved called de Reiziger.

Many people recognize the songs I wrote, but as I never sung them myself, they don’t know I wrote the lyrics. In some cases I wrote under the pseudonym ‘Zeepbel’. As everyone I also made mistakes in my life. One I will never be able to hide is about one of my most famous songs Malle Babbe. I looked at a painting made by Frans Hals and wrote the lyrics, however I wrote about a different painting, Het Zigeunermeisje.

I’m an apartment, divided over 2 floors. I have my own kitchen that looks out over a little sunny roof terrace. My living area has a leather vintage sofa, a table and a big desk with the same type writer Nijgh used for his master pieces. My kitchen has a fridge, stove, oven, coffee & tea. I have a separate second toilet on this floor.

On the top floor I have my own shower and toilet, so don’t have to share with anybody if you book me. You can enjoy a good night sleep in my big bed under the ceiling with old beams. Just swing yourself in bed. Need to squeeze in extra people? There are two extra single beds here. I’m perfect for a couple or family with bigger kids.

Hello I’m A.J. van der Pigge. I’m one of the first pharmacies in Haarlem. I specialize in herbs, ancient recipes, and herbal medicine. If you walk through the city, you will see a big building, there used to be a big department store called ‘Vroom & Dreesman’. They tried to buy up the whole block to build their new store. But I wouldn’t budge. They begged me to sell, but I stood firm. Eventually they had to build around me, which they did. Now about a 100 years later, 170 years old, I still exist. Not only do I still exist, I was crowned purveyor to the royal household in 1999, and am now a national monument. Above my front door you’ll see a ‘gaper’. Gapers served as a sign for pharmacists to attract customers, but also as a quality indicator of the store. The mouth of the gaper is not open to yawn, but to take medicine. The grimace of many yawners is explained because the medicine tasted nasty.

I have 2 single beds. Private shower and shared toilet.
