Meet the faces of Motto by Hilton Rotterdam Blaak: Hubert-Jan van Catz - General manager

And yes, that’s really him in the photo, dusting off the front door. Hubert-Jan isn’t one to shy away from rolling up his sleeves. Whether it’s jumping in to help housekeeping on a busy day or making sure every corner of the lobby feels just right, he leads by example. For him, being a General Manager means being present, not just behind the scenes, but right there in the heart of the action.

What drives him most? The people. Meeting guests from all over the world, hearing their stories, and creating a stay that feels personal and memorable, that’s where the magic happens.

Ask him for a local tip, and he’ll often direct guests to a spot many locals don’t even know about: the peaceful courtyard of the Rotterdam City Hall. The garden is a hidden gem filled with blooming flowers, fountains, and sculptures, a nice escape in the middle of a busy city.

When he’s off-duty, you’ll find Hubert-Jan starting his day with a coffee and pastry from Most Breakfast, before heading out into the city of Rotterdam. He loves wandering through the for local bites, biking along the Maas River, and discovering street art in the Wittedewithstraat. And if the sun’s out? Chances are he’s relaxing with friends in het Park Rotterdam.

One guest interaction that really stuck with him: There was a solo traveler who came in during a tough time in her life. She ended up connecting with other guests in our Commons area, and we even organized a small dinner night together. Before she left, she thanked us for making her feel less alone. It reminded me that hospitality is about more than service, it’s about human connection!🤗

Meet the faces of Motto Rotterdam Blaak: Mohamad Bizri - Groups & Events Supervisor

As a Groups & Events Supervisor, Mohamad’s day usually starts in the Back Office, reviewing incoming group bookings and event requests. It’s a dynamic role that keeps him on his toes and it’s exactly that variety he enjoys most.

When guests ask for local tips, he loves pointing them to hidden gems like Witte de Withstraat, just a short walk from the hotel, packed with cool galleries, unique shops, and cozy cafés. And while Markthal Rotterdam isn’t exactly a secret, he always encourages guests to really explore all the food stalls, there’s always something new to taste!

Mohammed’s perfect day off in Rotterdam starts with a coffee from Manmetbrilkoffie, followed by a walk through the park near the Euromast. He’ll often stop by Fenix Food Factory in Katendrecht for some local bites, and then hop on a watertaxi to catch the sunset near the Erasmus Bridge. “I love how full of surprises is”.

One of his favorite moments at Motto Rotterdam Blaak? The Employee Appreciation week! “We all took time out of our usual routines to celebrate together ,sharing a meal, laughing, and just enjoying each other’s company. It was one of those moments where you really feel the sense of family and support within the team.”

What sets Motto apart for Mohammed is the energy: “Unlike traditional hotel chains, there’s a startup-like vibe here where everyone’s ideas are valued and individuality is empowered.”😀

Motto by Hilton Rotterdam Blaak had a fantastic evening at the hosted at the Koninklijk Roei- en Zeilvereniging 'de Maas' — a wonderful gathering full of delicious herring, drinks, and great company.

This year wasn’t just — it was also meaningful: the auction of the first barrel of Hollandse Nieuwe went entirely to Support Casper, the foundation dedicated to research into pancreatic cancer. A beautiful cause we’re proud to support. 💙🐟

A big cheers to Jeroen Ballot for the invitation and collaboration — you sure know how to throw a proper Rotterdam-style haringparty! 🥂
