Bed and Bicycle Limes Oudwijk in Utrecht is named after two major historic facts that took place here. Situated on the banks of the Kromme (i.e. "Curved") Rijn, now a branch but formerly the main course of the river Rhine, the city of Utrecht was founded as a garrison town by the Roman army defending the "Limes", the northernmost border of the Empire. In the Middle Ages Utrecht played an important role in the Catholic Church. The history of Utrecht is also the history of the medieval monasteries. Between AD 1200-1500 there was an enormous abbey for nuns of nobles, called Oudwijck located here. The land house Oudwijk and church (see photo above) were built on the foundations of this medieval abbey.
