Established 8. June 1989
web: whalesafari.no We combine whale watching with research on these beautiful animals, and offer an educational experience! The two largest whale watching companies in Norway; Whale2Sea and Whalesafari Andenes merged toghether in 2023. Our Whale centre is located by the lighthouse in Andenes, Vesterålen, in northern Norway. Here the continental shelf lies closer to land than anywhere else along the Norwegian coast, making Andenes ideal for whale watching. During the year we can see 10 different whale species. The sperm whale, which is the largest toothed whales, typically feeds on deep sea squids and fish along the edge of the continental shelf. To help us locate the sperm whales, our boats are equipped with hydrophones (under water microphones): we can therefore listen to the clicking sounds that the sperm whale produces to communicate, navigate and to search for their prey. Other species of whales are killer whales (orcas), minke whales, pilot whales, dolphins, fin whales and humpback whales. Our guests can also learn more about the whales that we encounter in our Whale Exhibition, which is complementary in every whale watching ticket for both Whalesafari Andenes and Whale2Sea. Our summer season starts in May and lasts until September, while the winter season is from October to April. For information about trips, please check out our website or contact us via email or phone. Opening hours vary from summer to winter:
15. May - 15. September - 8 am - 7 pm* every day
* When there are no early trips, we open at 9 am.
16. September - 14. May* 9 am - 3.30 pm
* During Christmas holiday, we are closed.

Have you heard of Risso dolphins before? 🐬 This species has been observed more and more these past years in northern Norway 🌊👀😍 In collaboration with Sea Safari Andenes / Whale2Sea and Whalesafari Andenes - Hvalsafari Andenes, we started cataloguing individuals to better understand who they are and where they come from 🧐 Alexander Eckerle and Femke de Ruiter presented our work on this cool species at the conference of the European Cetacean Society last week! We can't wait for more sightings and work on the publication! Stay tuned! 😊 🐬

Male s***m whales have long been thought to be mainly solitary in their foraging grounds. However, recent research off Andøya has revealed that during winter and early spring the males are often found in couples and tightly knit groups of up to 12 individuals! The nature of these gatherings and why they occur during this season is a topic for future research.

The White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), in norwegian; Havørn (Sea Eagle), is the undisputed King of the Skies in Vesterålen. Its wingspan can reach up to 2.65 meters!! You can meet this one in one of our eagle-safaris – that we offer year round.
