Hadeland

NIBIO anslår at én million tonn bær råtner bort i norsk natur hvert år.

The first picture in this post reminds me of Norway's match with England in the World Cup! ⚽

And as the world looks to Norway, asking how such a small country can have such good athletes and good people like Erling Braut Haaland — it is worth going early into childhood.

Right now, this kindergarten in the Hadeland region is nominated for Norway’s best kindergarten.

It doesn’t even have indoor plumbing. It has an outhouse, and earlier this year won the municipality’s environmental award for this reason.

What it prioritizes: Nature. What a day looks like: The kids are dropped off at the bonfire, where they can eat their breakfast while parents drink coffee. The parents can stay as long as they like, getting to know all the other parents, all the workers, and all the children. Everybody loves the vibe so much, grownups tend to hang out.

But the kids run off to play. The rule is: you are allowed to go wherever you want. The fence is only there to keep the sheep out, not to keep the kids in. The kids are also told they can do it all.

They try, fail, and get to try again as many times as they need. Eventually they’ll make it. Teamwork happens naturally, like when one kid wants to build a canoe or a tree hut and has to recruit adults and other kids.

The adults have a principle: we go wherever the kids’ curiosity goes.

The result is 2–5 year-olds do and manage the most amazing things: long walks, complex projects, ice bathing, mountain climbing. The kids are not saved from being uncomfortable. They are sometimes very exhausted, and wet, and cold, and scared. So are the adults - But they overcome together. The grownups can see friendships and empathy evolving in real time. No wonder they love what they do, and give their job high value. And every parent thinks their child has the best childhood — it’s just the place you want to be!

Maybe this will be a bigger part of the future.

It’s not the gilded ballroom that will make you happy, and it’s not the fanciest playground that makes the childhood.
It’s whether the people around you are happy. And if they feel safe enough with each other to challenge each other, to have fun, to be silly and to be brave — then we can all do amazing things!

This is why Norway is so good. And our soccer team!
