In 1942, T.S. Eliot wrote the poem «Little Gidding». In 2011, we established Tromsø Bed & Books, and as we did that, we took some of his lines to heart. We put them on our website, as a torch or a flag or a roadmap to follow, both for ourselves and for everyone we wanted to come visit us:

«We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring
will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.»

Today, in 2022, we have arrived there: At the end.

Of all our exploring, of all our hard work and buoyant joy, of everything it has meant to run the best guesthouse in the world: All the unforgettable encounters with you, fellow explorers out there, all around the world, who also shall not ever cease from exploration but yet someday will arrive at an end of your own.

Yes, this is to say, as always in way too many words: We are closing our dear business. Not for now, not for a while, but for good (as «forever» seems too finite a word).

The decision didn’t come lightly, and it will forever be the hardest one we ever had to make. But nonetheless it is what we want to and need to do now, back here at the place where we once started, at a crossroads of adventures and a hunger for everything unexplored.

The pandemic is to blame for a lot of things, but this ending is not one of them. Our end is our own, a necessary and willed arrival at another beginning. Exactly of what we do not know, but as we close our doors we celebrate everything that was: Almost 11 years and 6500 guests from 65 countries. What an odyssey it was!

The stories and memories will live forever. To all of you out there who took part in creating them:

Tromsø! Vi leier ut vårt vakre, sentrumsnære og *überkoselige* hus på månedsbasis for en periode, slik at vi kan overleve på lang sikt i en verden post Covid-19. Det er utrolig trist at vi ikke kan drive på døgnbasis slik vi har gjort i 10 år (!!) nå i høst, men om vi får inn noen trivelige leietakere som kan ta godt vare på huset vårt mens pandemien går sin trasige gang over verden så gleder vi oss stort til å åpne igjen for vagabonder, festivaler, turister og farende fanter så snart markedet er tilbake ❤️

Vi vil helst leie ut til én gruppe folk som kjenner hverandre og hvor én person kan stå som ansvarlig leietaker, men er nå i dialog med en kjempehyggelig student fra fredsstudiet som er på jakt etter noen å dele med, så tips gjerne også enkeltmennesker som er på husjakt og har lyst til å bo i det som nok sannsynligvis blir byens aller triveligste kollektiv. Innflyttingsklart allerede på tirsdag, visning etter avtale :)

Supertakknemlige om folk der ute som ønsker at vi skal overleve kan hjelpe til å spre ordet.

På grunn av den pågående pandemien vurderer vi leie ut vårt fantastisk koselige "Writer's home" på månedsbasis for en periode. Leieperioden kan diskuteres, men vi leier gjerne ut frem til sommeren 2021. Gjestehuset vårt er høyt elsket av mange tilreisende gjennom 10 år og vi håper å komme...

Dear friends, near and far. The statistics are looking grim, and reality has become more surreal than anyone could imagine. Please allow us to interrupt your endless facebook scrolling, worry and disbelief for a second with this little piece of Europe. It's a photo of a small part of the world map that's covering one of the walls in our Writer's home. The pins are not representing coronaviruses, or hospitalizations, or deaths. This is another kind of statistic. These pins are you; lovely people who traveled here and left a little mark of the places you call home, before you traveled onwards again and brought with you memories that will stick in your heart forever. For every pin there are hundreds of other pins: The people you love and care about, the people you briefly met and will never forget, the people who are still strangers to you, yet to become friends or someone meaningful in your life; a sea of love and possibilities. We are all these pins, and now we will take care of eachother. It has a different meaning than we're used to; at this point in time caring for eachother means keeping a distance. It means canceling your travel plans. It means not being able to visit your old and dear grandmother, it means a lost birthday party, it means not being able to hang out with someone you love. It means putting the needs of your society over your own wishes and desires. It means thinking of your community first. It means not going to the gym, it means working from home, it means not knowing where your income will come from and still asking a friend if you can help out somehow. It means a lot of very difficult things. For us it means having to close our business from Monday on, not knowing for how long, and worrying if there will be any money left in our bank account when we can open again. But we are not alone in this, and nor are you. We are in this together, every single one of us. There is a very beautiful poem in Norwegian, called "A hard time's tale", written by the famous author Halldis Moren Vesaas. The first two lines read: "It is not called: I - no longer. From now on it is called: we. / If you are in the possession of happiness, it is no longer only yours to be." So spread whatever love you have, in whatever way you can - perhaps just not by kissing or hugging everyone you meet. Hehe. Keep your head cool and your heart warm. This too shall pass. And in every crisis there is also tremendous value: Something to be learnt, and something to be had, in the midst of all that is lost. Something good will eventually come out of it, and it is up to all of us what it will be. If nothing else, let's work for a bigger "we" and a smaller "I", a stronger sense of community that we can carry with us and rely on when s**t hits the fan or when joy once again is the main currency of human interaction, that day when people again will travel to stand in front of this wall and add yet another pin to the map of the world as we know it: the place that we all call home. How about this? 😍🤩 Not to brag or anything, but Tromsø is quite possibly the best city in the world. This is what we got just outside our doorstep, and we still have 3 months of winter left to enjoy it 🥳⛄️⛷ Who wants to come ski? 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏽

Hei verden! Ettersom en av våre ansatte har flytta til Oslo og en annen har blitt kapret av kulturbransjen, trenger vi litt forsterkninger nå som vi går høysesongen i møte. I den anledning:

HUSVERTER SØKES!

Vil du være med å drifte verdens beste gjestehus? Hos oss er ingen dager like, og siden vi er så få har man ofte har eneansvaret for alt som må gjøres i løpet av en dag. Du må derfor være flink til mye, og vi stiller høye krav til alt fra renholdsskills og praktisk sans til systemforståelse og kommunikasjonsegenskaper. Til gjengjeld får du masse frihet og masse ansvar, ingen like dager, god kaffe, høy trivselsfaktor og masse fine møter med masse fine folk fra hele verden. Og det som høyst sannsynlig kanskje er byens triveligste arbeidsplass!

Være vertskap: Ta imot gjester, svare på spørsmål, være en god Bed & Books- og tromsøambassadør
Renhold: Rengjøring etter hotellstandard
Kommunikasjon: Svare på telefon, epost og henvendelser på sosiale medier
Systemhåndtering: Håndtere bookingsystemet vårt, nøkkelsystemer, betalingssystemer og våre internkommunikasjonssystemer
Vaktmesteroppgaver: Skifte lyspærer, måke snø, klippe gress, feste løse skruer etc

EGENSKAPER
Selvstendig: Du liker å ta ansvar og er selvgående, initiativrik og løsningsorientert, og du er komfortabel med å ta beslutninger på egenhånd
Ordensmenneske: Du er systematisk, nøye og strukturert og har øye for detaljer
Kommunikativ: Du er utadvent, blid og kan kunsten å kommunisere presist og imøtekommende både muntlig og skriftlig på både norsk og engelsk

KVALIFIKASJONER

Evne til å holde høy standard på renhold og erfaring med praktiske oppgaver
Gode datakunnskaper, forståelse for digitale systemer og gjerne kjennskap til mac
God kjennskap til byen og dens natur- og kulturliv er en fordel
Erfaring fra reiselivsbransjen er et pluss, men personlig egnethet vil bli vektlagt

Stillingen(e) er på deltid på timesbasis. Vaktplaner setter vi i fellesskap og prøver så langt det går å imøtekomme ønsker og behov. Det vil være snakk om helgevakter (9-13) annenhver eller hver tredje helg, samt en del dagvakter (9-15) etter nærmere avtale. For rette vedkommende kan en fast høyere prosentstilling være aktuelt på sikt. Skriv gjerne i søknaden hvor mye du kan eller ønsker å jobbe og hvordan du ser for deg å kombinere det med andre engasjement / studier.

Du bør kunne jobbe i juleferien, men det er et absolutt krav at du også er tilgjengelig til våren og fremover. Studenter som bare ønsker et korttidsengasjement i et semester eller to vil ikke bli vurdert.

Tamtaramtamtaaaaaam! We are born a new! ...when it comes to appearances 🧡 We're still the same old at heart and soul - only a lot more happy! Our new visual profile is created by the super talented Liv Ragnhild Kjellman - Illustration and graphic design, and we couldn't be more happy with what she came up with. Do you like it? (This is where you give us a 👍 or a 🧡! Or a sad face, but that would be really sad....) We loooooove it! And for the observant out there; our website is still quiiiiite a long way from born a new. It's actally really old and tired if we're being honest. But our home on the www is soon to follow. Wohoooo!
