First morning of the NY, what an omen!! Puts a spring in your step! Driving back from a very dry Ironpot area west of Kingaroy, where I grew up, decided to take a different track towards the coast! So interesting seeing things through different eyes after a long break.... suddenly hit the beautiful rich, red, red volvanic soils around Kingaroy, peanut capital of Australia n there were peanuts growing. Just had to stop to show those from afar how n where alot of peanuts come and its not trees or China!! These plants were in need of rain immediately and actually a little stressed as they were flowering. The flowers actually grow into the soil to produce peanuts underground, hence another name, groundnuts. Then as I hit the coastal areas I learnt friends had had around 100 mls that night, while the bush area I’d left from were looking towards the heavens.

A brisk morning walk to somewhere new! A reminder Winter is almost here n we’ve had stunning sunny days for at least a week🌞 The Kamsund bridge, linking the mainland and island of Karmøy, Kamsundet or strait between the mainland, Haugesund n island of Karmøy and a small well kept graveyard. Just missed the Colourline ship sailing northbound between Hirtshals, Denmark, Kristiansand, Stavsnger and Bergen daily.

Isn’t it such fun to meet someone special doing something a bit different? Just love it n throw in a good splash of colour and bingo!! Nothing like a bit of colour to lift the spirits at the beginning of a grey day! If in Henningsvær U have to visit Erin who operates Rokken. She is such a delightful creative woman specialising mostly in hats n scarves. On my early morning wander couldn’t help but think about garden challengers one faces the further north you go in Arctic areas. Just gotta take your hat off to them. So as we left Erin I commented on her garden n was warmly asked if we’d like to have a look around the garden, of course!! First I noticed the huge rock leading to the entrance of Erin’s house n studio, then the interesting climbers either side of a couple of chairs prior to entering. The winds that roar in from the north pole don’t bear thinking about, n this garden sits promintently on the huge rock with additional soil in some nooks n crannies to support various plants. It was a delightful but too short a stop. As for trying to decide which hat should join the wardrobe well that was todays challenge, especially with such a tiny head....no more said @ Henningsvær

Still in Balestrand where tourism n apples have driven the economy for hundreds of years. We just had to take a few bottles of award winning cider along with Magni Jensen’s wonderful ceramics, many wood fired. Both Magni n her husband are so, so creative n full of vitality. Couldn’t help but notice the ‘gorgeous’ n organic looking wasp nests😃 just sitting...

Balestrand early morning, to get an overall idea what this dear little village had to offer, before breakfast n before meeting Leif’s school mate n wife Liv Anne the best Balestrand tour guides! The gardens n some of the interesting old buildings are affiliated with Kviknes Hotel while St Olavs church, a Stav church copy, Anglican n under whatever it is from the Diocese of Gilbraltar, of all places!

Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand was almost pulled down in the 1960’s! What a tradegy that would have been😡 Balestrand, ‘bale’ meaning flat, is the quaintest little village, along the edge of Sognefjord, one of the deepest, longest, UNESCO listed fjords of Norway and surrounded by towering mountains! Although remote, its easily accessible , through n over extraordinary mountains n valleys! Thanks to Leif’s school mate n his wife Liv Anne we got a real insiders perspective! They were gems themselves! Because of Balestrand’s situation and the special fjord reflected light it has attracted artists n creatives for many, many generations. Kaiser Wilhelm visited regularly in the late/early part of 18/1900’s leaving quite a legacy of statues. One of the carved chairs he used is marked under the seat - only a local would know that!! So special to have Svein n Liv Anne to show and introduce us to so many of the local treasures. Kviknes hotel exemplifies the jewel. The art n number of ‘salons’ all differently decorated along with huge dining room worth visiting. A little later in the day we saw the house where the wood carver lived n worked!

Smedsvik, meaning Blacksmith Bay, was the original name for the place we’ve called home for the past 13 years. It was known as Svallsnd when we purchased it .If the blacksmith built this Løa or barn it could be about 130 years old. About 2/3’s was used to store hay for the Winter months, a cow n maybe a sheep or 2 n possibly a pig lived rather cosily together. We were fortunate to have a visit from a noted Alpine plantsman n his wife some years ago. His wife asked if he could take a photo of the two of us infront of the loø but under no circumstance get the corrugated iron in the picture, just the roof! As corrugated iron has been such a part of everyday life ‘downunder’ I was quite horrified. I’m sure the corrugated iron is a more recent addition, whereas one end could be original.

Rain overnight was followed by a beautiful morning. As I walked to the garage couldn’t help but try to capture the morning light. Visitors called to see the garden quite early as can be seen on Warzawska Nike, scrambling amongst New Dawn. The snow capped mountains afar could be easily seen in the crystal clear air, from the boathouse. The wet feet lovers, Rodgerisia n Lysichiton’s huge leaves caught the eye n have to make the most of flowers from the garden @ Utbjoa, Hordaland, Norway
