Bhai Tika is a significant ritual observed during the Tihar festival, which is often referred to as the festival of lights. This ritual celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters and falls on the final day of Tihar, which is the second-largest festival in Nepal after Dashain.
During Bhai Tika, sisters apply a special multi-colored tika (a mixture of red, yellow, green, blue, and white rice paste) on their brothers' foreheads, representing love and protection. Alongside the tika, they also offer blessings and perform a ritual to wish their brothers a long, healthy, and prosperous life. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and vow to protect them.
The ceremony is usually accompanied by the exchange of sagun (sacred foods) and special dishes, including sweets and traditional Nepali foods. Bhai Tika is a cherished celebration of family bonds, love, and the wish for well-being among siblings.
