At this altitude, survival has always required a particular kind of resilience in the people, and in the animals that sustain them.

The yak is perhaps the most emblematic creature of the high Himalayas that has adapted over millennia to the cold, the altitude and the terrain of places like Upper Mustang. Alongside herds of sheep that have grazed these valleys for generations, they remain a constant presence in a landscape that has changed remarkably little over time.

Chhyama Lake sits at the base of the Nilgiri Himal, a glacial alpine lake reached through rugged terrain, stream crossings and mountain forest in the Jomsom Valley.

The trek there is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself. Midway through, the Shinta Mani culinary team sets up a mountaineer-inspired picnic in the wilderness with high-energy food, a glass of chilled rosé and nothing but the valley around you. Few lunches anywhere feel quite like this one.

Weathered orange chortens rest at the base of Upper Mustang’s carved cliffs, standing as ancient guardians believed to ward off evil spirits and bring blessings to travelers.

These centuries-old stupas mark a landscape shaped as much by faith as by wind and time, their rust-red spires standing in quiet contrast to the pale, fluted cliffs behind them. Many travelers pause here on the long drive to Lo Manthang, a brief stop between raw geology and generations of devotion.

Built almost camouflaged into the mountainside above Jomsom, Shinta Mani Mustang was constructed primarily from locally sourced stone and wood, a structure that sits within the landscape rather than imposing on it.

The internal courtyard provides shelter from the powerful Jomsom winds, while floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the property open up to breathtaking views of the Nilgiri range.
