A Goodbye to Nepal, but Never to the Memories
Some stories are too beautiful not to share. This week, we had the honor of welcoming back one of the most extraordinary travelers we’ve ever met , Ms. Helen Mell, an 88-year-old adventurer from Australia.
Helen’s connection with Nepal began in 1993 AD, and since then she has returned 13 times. Over the decades, she has walked countless trails, completed many treks, volunteered in villages, and most importantly, built bonds so strong that strangers became family. For her, Nepal has never been just a country it has been home, heart, and healing.
This visit, however, carries a different weight. Helen came solo to our hotel, as she has done several times before, not for another trek or adventure but to say Goodbye to Nepal. At the age of 88, she knows this may be her last journey here. Her eyes sparkled with joy to be back, yet held the quiet sadness of farewell.
Still, her adventurous spirit shines brightly. From here, she will journey alone to Ghandruk (2,012 m) & Marpha (2,670 m).
Her purpose is simple yet profound: to reconnect with old friends, meet the families she calls her own, and gift them with tokens of love she has carried from afar. It is her way of leaving a piece of her heart behind in the land that has given her so much.
Sitting with her, we were reminded that travel is not about the number of places you visit, but the depth of the connections you make. Helen’s journey is a testament to courage, kindness, and the enduring power of human bonds.
As she said with a gentle smile, “I am happy to be here again, but also sad, because this is my last time.”
Nepal will forever remember travelers like Helen, who come not only to see the mountains, but to embrace the people, the culture, and the spirit of this land.
From all of us at Hotel Mountain View, thank you Helen, for choosing us as part of your Nepal journey. Your story will continue to inspire every soul who reads it. 💙
