I stepped outside this morning and this is what was waiting.

The valley spread out below, the sky doing something I couldn't look away from - crimson and orange right down to the ridge line, with the lights of Blenheim's Riverlands Park still on in the distance.

Winter mornings here have their own kind of quiet. The air is cold. The view is this.

Meet the newest (and tiniest) guests at Mountainview Villa! 🐐

Our Chief Happiness Officer Beta wasn't quite sure what to make of these baby goats - and judging by his expression, he's reserving judgement for now! Clark couldn't resist a cuddle with these fluffy new arrivals.

There's always something happening on our 12 acres in Riverlands - and Beta makes sure he's first to greet (or inspect) every new face.

Meet Beta - Chief Happiness Officer of Mountainview Villa Luxury Lodge.

His job description is simple: greet every arrival, supervise every breakfast, and inspect the deck at regular intervals throughout the day.

He takes it very seriously.

Beta is a Bichon Poodle with a gift for reading people. He knows within the first ten minutes whether you're a dog person. If you are, he'll find you - slow tail wag, gentle approach, quiet introduction. Then, if you pass his test, he'll roll onto his back.

That's the approval. That's the highest honour he gives.

If you're not a dog person, don't worry. He's a polite gentleman. He'll respect your space and let you enjoy the villa in peace.

Many guests say meeting Beta becomes one of the unexpected highlights of their stay. We believe them. He's been doing this job since we opened - and he has never once called in sick.

A group of 12 classmates - most of them visiting New Zealand for the first time.

That's who walked through our door.

By the end of the stay, one of them wrote this:
"Our hosts Clark and Didith answered all our questions before our arrival, made suggestions and facilitated every aspect of our stay patiently and professionally yet in a very endearing way which made us feel so special. A well stocked kitchen which was always available, delicious meals cooked by the chef and opportunity for group bonding like stargazing, zumba, karaoke or just endless banter around the long dining table. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to hosts that made our New Zealand experience memorable and made all of us feel like family."

They hiked Mt Vernon, visited wineries, went on scenic flights, and came back each evening to Clark's cooking and that long dining table. One group at a time. No strangers. The whole villa theirs.

Four and a half months ago this week I left my government job after 33 years.

I'd been planning the move for a while. I'd been quietly building Mountainview Villa for six years. But there's a difference between planning to leap and actually leaping.

What I've learned in those months: the people who run beautiful small businesses are not extraordinary people. They're ordinary people who showed up every day with patience.

Clark and I are very much still showing up. Some days that mean making jars of jam, lemon curd or kombucha. Some days it means writing to 95 people who haven't heard from us in a year (more on that another time). Some days it means swimming in the pool at night when we do not have guests.

Thank you for being here for the new chapter.

Clark is at it again.

This winter, he's building our new outdoor kitchen and pergola - a proper BBQ area where guests can cook under the stars with the pool lit up beside them and Marlborough views stretching out in every direction.

He built the food truck from scratch. He maintains this entire property with his own two hands. And now he's adding another piece to the puzzle - because that's just who Clark is.

We can't wait to show you the finished product. Watch this space.
