There’s more to the Jailhouse than its history…it’s a remarkable piece of architecture in its own right 🖤
Built in 1874, the Jailhouse was designed by Benjamin W. Mountfort, one of New Zealand’s most celebrated Gothic Revival architects.
It was also an early example of concrete construction in New Zealand, with walls around 60cm thick - pretty pioneering for its time.
And then there are the details… the original ironwork, sweeping galleries, arched windows, timber stairs and layers of paint that tell more than 150 years of stories.
Today, you can walk the same corridors, climb the same stairs and sleep inside the original cells - experiencing a little piece of Christchurch history for yourself.
Stay somewhere with a story. 🖤
