Very proud to have had the opportunity to provide contracting and other support services to the Central Fencing, Pest Proof Fencing team here on Pitt Island. The new preditor proof fence at Caravan Bush will ensure a secure and safe environment for some of our most endangered species. Thanks to DOC and the landowners for making this happen, and the Lads working on the project under some challenging conditions.

One of our last groups for the season. From this one vantage point, several Pitt Island Shags, no less than 17 Chatham Island Oyster Catchers, dozens of White Fronted Terns, and a few meters away a family of NZ Shore Plover.

End of an era and a sad but fantastic crossing of Pitt Straight in glass calm conditions early this morning. Delivering our little boat A-Lure to her new owners in Kaikoura. Many wonderful birding, fishing and scenic trips around Pitt Island over the last 10 years. We are now using local operators, with larger vesssels for our birding & fishing trips and Island transfers.

Hopefully they will be back on Pitt Island soon.

Five birds were all that stood between survival and silence.

One female carried the future in her bones.

But the part most people miss is how deliberate her rescue became.

In 1980, on New Zealand’s Chatham Islands, the black robin population fell to five. Only one breeding female remained. Conservationists called her Old Blue.

They moved her eggs into safer nests, fostered them under other birds, and monitored every hatch. When she chose unstable nesting spots, they intervened. Every surviving chick carried her DNA.

That genetic bottleneck was extreme. The entire modern population descends from a single mother, a rarity in conservation biology and a risk most species never recover from.

Today, the black robin lives because one small bird kept laying when extinction was already scheduled. Sometimes survival is not dramatic. It is persistent.

It's official. Shore Plover checked in to Flowerpot Bay Lodge, well nearly. Fantastic to see one of the worlds rarest species, this juvenile, take up residence on Flowerpot Beach. So highly likely that others are breeding on Pitt Island.

Successful Birding Trip
Our team of passionate birders were treated to some great weather and fantastic sightings last week, with over 50 specis sighted, everything that we hoped to see. Highlights included our recently returned Antipodean Albatross nesting again on Mt Hakepa, a breeding pair of Shore Plover with 3 chicks and the Chatham Petrel ON Pitt Island. Numerous sightings of the Forbes Parakeet on Mangere Island. Plus one of our favorites, the Chatham Albatross at the Pyramid. We are now offering two different trips on a permanent basis. Details on our website https://www.flowerpotlodge.co.nz/birders.
Also on this page the full trip report from Dion Hobcroft , thanks Dion
