One of the best parts about staying at Anglers Lodge? You don't even have to get your feet wet.

Our boat launching service means your boat can be launched for you, taking the hassle out of getting on the water. No backing down a busy ramp. No climbing into cold water. No stress before the day has even begun.

Just arrive, get your gear organised, and head off to explore some of the Coromandel's best fishing and coastline.

Then, after a day on the water, you're only minutes from a hot shower, a comfortable bed, and somewhere to tell the stories of the day's catch.

Less time at the ramp. More time on the water.

🎣 Ask us about our boat launching service when you book your stay.

If your idea of camping involves native bush, birdsong and waking up overlooking the Coromandel coast… we know a spot. ⛺️

Our non-powered campsites sit in the upper part of Anglers Lodge, tucked amongst the native bush with views over the Lodge and Amodeo Bay.

They’re ideal for tents and smaller vans, with our kitchen, BBQs, hot showers and swimming pool just a short stroll down the hill.

No power.

No problem.

Just a proper Kiwi camping holiday in a pretty spectacular part of the country.

Ever wondered how Amodeo Bay got its name?

Long before Anglers Lodge welcomed its first holidaymakers, this little stretch of the Coromandel coast already had quite a story.

The name dates back to 1894, when Charles McCall arrived at what was then an unnamed bay with a raft of pre-cut timber, planning to establish a farm.

Unfortunately, the Coromandel weather had other ideas.

Heavy rain caused the creek to flood, washing away the timber that was meant to become the family’s new home. Captain Frank Amodeo, whose ship Argyle was anchored offshore, came to the aid of the McCall family as they sheltered under canvas on the beach.

His kindness wasn’t forgotten.

The little bay was named Amodeo Bay in his honour, and more than 130 years later, the name remains (along with Captain Amodeo Rd).

Captain Amodeo himself had a fascinating history. Born in Trieste in 1841, he came to New Zealand, worked as a miner in Thames and eventually became a well-known ship’s captain, travelling the Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel coast at a time when boats were often far more important than roads.

If you love these little glimpses into the history of our region, let us know in the comments and follow along.

👀🦜 Spotted in the hills behind the lodge 🦜 👀
If you hear the unmistakable screech of a kākā over the northern Coromandel, you might assume it’s a local.

But kākā don’t necessarily stay put.

GPS tracking has revealed just how incredibly mobile these native parrots can be, moving between forests, farmland, the Coromandel Peninsula and islands scattered across the Hauraki Gulf.

In one remarkable study, a GPS-tagged kākā completed a 1,000km round trip through the Waikato, Coromandel and Hauraki Gulf, a scale of movement researchers had never recorded in kākā before.

Other tracked birds travelled to Aotea / Great Barrier Island, Kawau Island and Te Hauturu-o-Toi / Little Barrier Island.

And their movements can change with the seasons. During winter and early spring, many of the tracked birds stayed within just a few kilometres of where they were tagged. Come late spring, some took off, with 10 travelling more than 100km.

It means the forests of the northern Coromandel form part of a much bigger landscape for these birds.

Places like Moehau provide important kākā habitat, where predator control helps protect them from introduced predators. But kākā themselves don’t recognise the boundaries between reserves, forests or even the mainland and offshore islands.

They can move enormous distances across the landscape looking for food and opportunity.

So that noisy kākā flying over your head?

It may be a Coromandel local. Or it might just be passing through. 🌿🦜 This playful bird spent 20 minutes hopping between branches in the bush up behind the lodge a few weeks ago.
