A quintessential slice of Kiwi scenic splendor, Pukeko Cottage is a newly opened bed and breakfast overlooking Otago Harbour, only 7 minutes’ drive or bus journey from Dunedin’s stadium and city and Otago University. Martin Andrew and Andrew Perkins conceived of Pukeko Cottage as “a retreat for jaded academics” and a restorative place for all people to regain their spirit. It’s perfectly located f

or delegates attending conferences at Otago University, creative people seeking a retreat or for visitors to Dunedin attending musical and sporting events at the Forsyth Barr stadium, which is only a short scenic drive away. There is currently one queen suite for one or two guests, available, with plans for another later in 2017. Freshly decorated, the suite, situated in an annex of a characterful historic villa and former manse, comprises a huge furnished room with its own adjoining bathroom and private patio. For parties of more than two, there is another beautifully furnished queen-sized room available, with guests sharing the facilities of the suite guests. Located in the tiny Westharbour suburb of St. Leonards on the way to Port Chalmers, Pukeko Cottage looks over Otago’s stunning harbour towards the Harbour Cone, a volcanic landmark in the contours of the landscape and a popular subject in works by local artists. The area was named after Saint-Leonards-on-Sea on the Suffolk coast by early settler David Carey, after whom the nearby Carey’s Bay is named. Carey’s Bay today is well known for its historic restaurant/pub, with its well-regarded local fresh seafood. In addition to having some of the best-preserved Victorian architecture of all gold rush-era settlements, Dunedin, in fact, is a mecca for seafood lovers, with wonderful seafood chowders to be found on nearly any restaurant menu. Hosts Martin Andrew and Andrew Perkins are Kiwis returned from abroad, thrilled to be sharing their local knowledge and insights with guests. After tastefully renovating the interior of Pukeko Cottage, they continue to exercise their green fingers on the ever-changing garden. As hosts they can either be just sources of local information or are happy to share conversation and conviviality in whatever ways are comfortable. Guest Susan Davis writes: “I had a wonderful time staying with Martin and Andrew. They are warm, friendly hosts with a great knowledge of local sights and events, and staying in their beautiful home was very relaxing and enjoyable. I highly recommend their hospitality." The property is currently offered through Air BNB and can be viewed and booked at https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/18615651
