A group of local residents who are concerned about the consequences of Councils' proposals have formed an incorporated society called Sustainable Glenorchy. Sustainable Glenorchy was born out of frustrations in dealing with the Council about the impending wastewater scheme in Glenorchy. The group of 16 (and growing) fully understand and support the need for a community wastewater scheme for Glenor

chy. However, we are really worried that not only will Council’s decisions result in a scheme that is far more expensive than it need be but it also won’t address the list of issues that the residential and business community have repeatedly said are important to them.

The hearing for the proposed Grand Earnslaw Hotel is finishing at midday today. Sustainable Glenorchy presented this am and several locals went along and expressed their views. A few small changes have been proposed by Doug but basically it will still be well over the allowed height regulations and very large. Who knows what the outcome will be and we probably won’t hear the result until some time in the new year but our hope is that the architects go back to the drawing board and come up with a beautiful boutique hotel that fits with the Glenorchy character.

Hi everyone living in Glenorchy or those who love Glenorchy - have a look at this resource consent application for the proposed Grand Earnslaw Hotel. Please consider opposing it - the hotel is twice the allowable height for visitor accommodation, it is 12 times the size of the original hotel (64 rooms), and the developer wants Glenorchy to provide parking for its' guests. To give you an idea of the height of the proposed hotel, it will be 3.8m above the top rim of the water tank.
