⚠️ SH1 UPDATE: Kaikoura is OPEN for business
Recent heavy rain has caused damage to SH1 southbound towards Christchurch, so that section is temporarily closed while repairs are carried out.

Good news though: Kaikoura is fully open! Traffic is flowing normally from the North, and almost all our local operators, attractions and accommodations are open for business - including us here at The Factory!

Plus, there's no better time to explore our local beaches after a storm: raw, wild and wonderfully invigorating!

We decided to make the most of the beautiful weather and tackle the Blue Duck Valley Trail! 🥾 We started from the Blue Duck Valley Road entrance and finished at the Okiwi Bay carpark.

We’d attempted this hike before, but the weather closed in quickly, so we had to turn back. Yesterday though? Absolute perfection—ideal hiking conditions, and we grabbed the chance straight away!

And wow… we are so glad we did! 😍 The views are absolutely incredible and more than make up for the steady, relentless incline… well, for the most part anyway! 😀

⚠️ Important: This trail is definitely NOT for beginners. Come prepared with plenty of water and food — it easily takes 4–6 hours one way.

This morning we tackled the hike from Blue Duck Valley Road toward Okiwi. We didnt pick the best day weather wise —we were basically "gorillas in the mist" the whole time—but the trail itself was awesome! We’ll definitely be back on a clear day to catch those views we missed. Highly recommend this for fit hikers who don't mind a few hills! Just wear the right gear and be prepared for river crossings; if the water is flowing like it was today, you’re definitely getting wet😀

This morning we headed out to hike Mt Fyffe, it started with perfect blue skies and a comfortable temperature. There were plenty of people on the track, even a runner! Yikes- not us haha, we took the "slow and steady" approach. Stopping a third of the way up to soak in the incredible views and catch our breath. We decided to turn back there, which was lucky as the clouds rolled in shortly after!

For those looking for a rewarding hike without the full day commitment, trekking to the seats is a great choice. It offers a fantastic vantage point and a quick descent, perfect for fitting in other tours and activities in Kaikoura.
