The Douglas Suite is one of three rooms at Drifting Sands Beachfront Retreat 🏝​​​​​​​​​
In addition to being able to relax in your own private space, there are plenty of dining options nearby. Of course, if you don't feel like going out then there's always the option to whip up something delicious in our fully equipped kitchen …or perhaps some tasty treats from one of our local bakeries or cafes – perfect for those lazy days when all you want to do is stay in bed!

Our beloved Drifting Sands tree is an iconic symbol of resilience, standing strong and proud despite the severe erosion that occurred in 2019. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
The erosion was so fierce that it swallowed up around 40 meters of our beachfront in about 5 months, yet this single tree managed to stand its ground against the onslaught. From raging storms to scorching hot summers, it has remained!​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
The cabbage tree/ti kouka holds an important place in many Kiwi's hearts and is symbolic of New Zealand's natural landscape. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
Maori have built an intimate relationship with the different varieties of the cabbage tree, using it as a source of medicine, fiber, and spiritual iconography. It is believed that placentas were buried at its foot and that the spirits of the dead would rest within it.

The décor is playful and quirky; with gorgeous native wood and concrete features throughout and hand-made bespoke furniture pieces adding to the ambiance. There are also a collection of original artworks by local artists available for purchase should you wish to take home a little reminder of your stay. ​​​​​​​​

What really sets this retreat apart from others is its atmosphere. Natural light gives the space an airy feel while still providing plenty of warmth and comfort. Each piece of furniture and artwork has been carefully found, curated, and selected to evoke nostalgia - from the vintage tretchikoff and Lynch prints sourced in Europe and the UK to the cozy immaculate vintage corner lounge suite where you can curl up with a good book...​​​​​​​​
