Ako Retreat

Ako Retreat Secluded and tidy 3 bedroom house with ample outdoor space. With rural views and kid-friendly spaces, forage our wild garden, eggs & fruit trees.

Sitting behind the old school, our name is inspired by the Te Ao Māori concept of Ako - reciprocal learning. Our FB page has had several iterations, most recently as Old Kura - where we loved learning from and inspiring other parents and educators. Continuing with this kaupapa, our hope is for Ako Retreat to evolve as a unique space for visitors to relax and draw inspiration.

❄️ It's sure getting colder out there, with our first real frost of the season this morning... ☀️ Our little whare is super warm though, with the central 🔥 fireplace keeping the open-plan kitchen and living space cosy, and with heaters in each bedroom. We had 12 guests (8 kids!) enjoy the warmth last weekend, with extra mattresses on hand for those larger groups. Check out some of our recent feedback, and see our AirBnb listing for upcoming winter discounts ✌️ https://abnb.me/uL2Xl0pPrAb

Introducing... Ako Retreat 🏞️

A massive ngā mihi nui and thanks to everyone who's followed our page and it's name changes, most recently as Old Kura - where we shared our love of learning from and inspiring other parents and educators. Continuing with this kaupapa, our hope is for Ako Retreat to evolve as a unique space for visitors to connect, relax and draw inspiration.

Ako Retreat offers a secluded and tidy 3 bedroom private house with ample outdoor space. Sitting behind the old school, our name is inspired by the Te Ao Māori concept of Ako - reciprocal learning. With rural views and kid-friendly spaces, guests can roam our wild garden, collect free-range eggs & enjoy the outdoors.

We're close to the Rangitīkei river and rafting, bushwalks, white cliffs boulders and Manawatū scenic route. So if you're looking for a sweet place to stay this summer, check out our website for more info and prices.

Kia ora e hoa mā... we've had a few changes here at the Kura - Memory taking up fulltime mahi as Tumuaki (Principal) of Mangaweka School and Reesh returning to whāmere duties at home. We're finding a lot of joy with our Mangaweka community through School and Playcentre, and at home having fun with all sorts of new play spaces for our tamariki. About a year ago we also expanded our little plot of land, which now includes the old 'headmasters house' (a doer upper), a paddock and barn... There's also been some time for writing and meditation - and sometimes a combination of the two. Peace + aroha ✌️ Article via Childspace Early Learning Space Magazine, Issue 64

Ngā mihi me te arohanui mo te ra māmā 🥰

Massive loves to all the mamas out there, especially those flying solo, those who have lost, and those who are about to embark on the motherhood journey 💓

My most favourite gift today, a sandy, chestnutty, leafy, feathery banquette 🍂🌿🍰

10 weeks the hugelkultur has been down. It's our first time experimenting with this approach to gardening and it's been interesting observing and learning along the way.

We only have a few veges in this time - courgettes, cucumbers, and a couple of varieties of tomatoes all grown from seed, and a few lettuces, broccoli, spinach and rainbow beets. We will keep adding as we go! 🥕🥦

Our tamariki have been involved with each step, right up to adding the "māra muesli" (mulch made from grass clippings, chook manure and woodchips).

🍃Nurture in Nature 2020🍃

What an epic few days! We are so full to the brim with aroha and inspiration 💞

A massive thank you to all who came and played with us this weekend. The collective energy of so many folks passionate about engaging and nurturing tamariki in Nature was incredibly moving.

Our beautiful Oldkura & local ngahere was full of laughter & playfulness as well as deep, thoughtful and reflective discussion. And THE most wholesome and delicious kai!

Special mentions to our mana wahine keynote who shared her wisdom so naturally. A beautiful storyteller with layers of insightful teachings, all inspired by the whakapapa effect 🌿

So many to thank 🙏
