Auger (noun) /AW-ger/: The big spiral drill bit we attach to our mini-excavator to dig perfect, clean holes.

If you've ever tried digging fence posts or pile holes in tough Waikato clay with a spade, you'll know how tough it is on your back ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

This handy attachment hooks straight onto our mini-excavator and spins into the ground, lifting the dirt out as it goes. It makes the job fast and keeps your holes neat and uniform ๐Ÿ™Œ

Forty plus years in Huntly means a lot of seasons, a lot of weekend jobs, and a lot of backyard makeovers right here in our community.

That milestone represents decades of local knowledge we've built up alongside you. We've helped granddads tackle their first retaining walls, and now we're helping their grandkids choose the right plate compactor or concrete saw for their first homes.

We know the local soil, we know which gear fits through a standard side gate, and we love helping you save thousands by doing the job yourself instead of paying for a contractor. If you ever need a quick run-down on machine safety or specs before you load up, we're always here for a friendly chat.

Thanks for letting us be a part of your builds, clean-ups, and local events for over four decades. Here's to many more DIY projects together ๐Ÿ’›

Asking what happens if a machine acts up after hours might feel like you're being a pain, but it is a completely fair question when you have a weekend job to finish.

We get it. Nobody wants to look like they don't know what they're doing when they walk up to the hire counter. But renting gear like a mini excavator or a wood chipper is a big investment of your time and cash. You deserve to know exactly what you are getting into before you tow it out of the yard.

When you are locking in your gear for the weekend, you have every right to get clear answers on the logistics. Here are a few questions we actually encourage you to ask us:

>> "What happens if this concrete saw stops working on a Sunday afternoon?"
>> "Are there any extra cleanup fees if I bring the plate compactor back muddy?"
>> "Can you show me how to start this diesel engine step-by-step before I leave?"

Knowing these details ahead of time saves you massive stress when you are in the middle of a heavy job. We would much rather spend an extra five minutes running through the controls with you at the counter than have you stuck in a muddy trench wondering what lever to pull.

Next time you swing by the yard to book your gear, ask us anything. There are no silly questions here. Let us help you get sorted for your next project ๐Ÿ’›

A 110mm branch jammed sideways in the infeed chute can stall the cutting disc and bend a knife in under a second. That's your hire session done before smoko. ๐Ÿชต

Most people treat a wood chipper like a rubbish bin. Anything goes in, any angle, any condition. The HANSA doesn't work that way.

There are three feeding mistakes we see again and again:

โ†’ Forcing branches over the 110mm limit
โ†’ Starting with wet, green wood before the machine is warm
โ†’ Shoving material in sideways instead of straight down the chute

Get it right and you'll chip a full trailer load before lunch. Get it wrong and you're paying for a hire session you can't finish.

Booking a HANSA for the weekend? Flick us a message and we'll talk you through the gear before you pick up.

A quality plate compactor costs around $2,800 to buy outright, and when you only need it for one weekend to prep a driveway, that is the whole conversation.

We get asked about this a lot at the counter here at Huntly Hire! Customers often wonder if they should shell out for their own tools instead of hiring. The truth is, neither option is wrong. It all comes down to how often you are actually going to use that piece of kit.

If you are tackling a one-off weekend project like laying a new garden pathway through tough Waikato clay, hiring is a no-brainer. You pay a fraction of the cost for the exact tool you need, you get the job done, and you do not have to worry about maintenance, depreciation, or finding space in the shed to store a bulky machine for the next five years.

On the flip side, if you are a local tradey using a concrete saw or a compactor every single week on site, then buying outright starts to make sense. Once the cost per use drops below standard hire rates, owning your own gear pays off, even with the added hassle of servicing and repairs.

Before you make the final call on your next project, feel free to pull into the big yellow building at 48 George Drive in Huntly. We will always give you honest, straight-up advice on whether to hire or buy for your specific job! You can also give the team a bell on 07 828 9743 to see what we have ready in the yard ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

You've booked the chainsaw, the branches are waiting, and the weekend is finally here. Most first-time hirers don't think about the details until they're already standing in the yard with the saw running.

So before you pick yours up, here are three things worth knowing:

-Petrol chainsaws need a 50:1 fuel-to-oil mix, not straight petrol
-If the chain feels like hard work, check the bar oil before you blame the chain
-Chaps, boots, and gloves aren't optional, even for "just a quick job"

Swipe through for the full rundown. A few minutes of prep makes the difference between a smooth Saturday and a trip to A&E.

Got questions before you hire? Pop into the shop or give us a call. We'd rather talk it through with you than see you back here on Monday with a story.

Three customers last month hired diggers too big to fit through their gate. Two ended up hand-digging the last two metres anyway.

Bigger machine, faster job. Sounds right, until the excavator's parked on the driveway and the actual dig site is round the back.

On most residential sections, the real bottleneck isn't power. It's access. Side gates, narrow paths, fence lines, the corner of the house. A machine that can't reach the work area is just expensive gear sitting still.

Our 1.7-tonne mini excavator fits through a standard side gate, turns in a tight yard, and gets to where the dirt actually is. Plenty of grunt for footings, drainage runs, pool prep, and landscaping jobs.

Not sure what'll fit? Measure your narrowest point (usually the gate) and give us a call. We'll match you to the right size first time๐Ÿ’›

Ever pulled up to our yard, stared at the trailers, and wondered whether to hook up an open trailer or a cage? It is a question we get almost every day here at Huntly Hire, and getting it wrong makes a massive difference once you are halfway through loading your gear.

If you are shifting long timber, heavy building sheets, or machinery that needs to slide on and off cleanly, you want an open trailer. Without sides in your way, you can load from the edge, strap your gear down tight, and get moving without any fuss.

But if you are tackling a clean-up on the lifestyle block,or moving some furniture a caged trailer is your best mate. The high mesh sides are built to keep loose, bulky material like green waste, soil, or mulch safely inside so you do not lose half your load all over the Waikato Expressway.

We have multiple trailer sizes ready to tow at the big yellow building, starting from simple single-axle units up to heavy-duty tandems. Our team will always help you get hitched up safe and legal before you hit the road ๐Ÿ’›
