I was contemplating what to cook for dinner when a lovely guest called Charlotte came in with a plate of fish for us!! She had been out with and had a fantastic time. Too much fish for one so we scored some dinner!!

We had a fantastic stay this week at Anchor Inn Motel and can absolutely see why it’s so highly rated. Anyone reading reviews from before 2025 please note that there are new owners of this Inn and they are awesome!

From the moment we arrived, the owner Christine was incredibly welcoming and helpful, making check-in easy and giving great local tips for things to do around Kaikōura. That genuine, friendly service really stood out and set the tone for the whole stay.

The room, kitchenette and bathroom were spotless, spacious, and very well set up with everything you need. The bed was super comfortable, and it was clear a lot of care goes into keeping the place clean and well maintained. We also loved how quiet it was—perfect for a relaxing night after a day of exploring.

The location is another big plus. It’s close enough to town to be convenient, but just far enough away to feel peaceful. Waking up to views of the sunrise and the ocean was a real highlight!

Little touches made a difference too—easy parking right outside, great amenities, and thoughtful extras, not to mention a huge collection of great DVDs available at the front office, that made it feel more like a home than an Inn.

Overall, this is one of those places that checks all the boxes: very clean, comfortable, spacious, friendly, and great value. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again and would definitely highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kaikōura.
