We are so excited to welcome Ray Woolf to our festival on Saturday 22nd February.
Ray Woolf began his career as a thirteen year old in London. It was the beginning of the Rock Revolution, and Ray was in three bands before he arrived in New Zealand in 1962 he sang in Auckland's Oriental Ballroom, was spotted and signed to Zodiac records, and in late 62 toured the country with Helen Shapiro🎷
Ray went on to appear in all the early television shows, In the Groove, C'Mon, On the Beat Side and was resident on Happen Inn for two years.
He went on to host Play School, sang the winning song on Studio One and a whole lot of other shows before hosting Two on One in 1977, 1978 and the Ray Woolf Show in 1979-1982.
A TV acting career was also underway with a year on A Going Concern in 1972. He went on to do three seasons in Marlin Bay and guest roles in Hercules, Zena, Young Hercules, St Legal, The Strip, Orange Roughies and more recently Nothing Trivial.
Musical Theatre was also on Ray's agenda, beginning with Hans Christian Anderson in 1980, The Music Man, A Slice of Saturday Night, The New Rocky Horror Show, Blood Brothers and over a hundred performances as Captain Von Trapp in the Sound of Music, he played the king in The King and I, and the Aussie production of West Side Story,
Movies include, Lucy, Back Rover Road, Maiden Voyage, Super Fire, King Kong, Insatiable Moon and Siege.
Ray still performs in cabaret and concerts. Awards include Entertainer of the Year 1975, Most Professional Entertainer 1976, Pegasus Award 1981, Benny Award 2007 and MNZM 2008.
Ray supports Diabetes Auckland, is an ambassador for Starjam for special needs children and isan ambassador for the Prostate Cancer Awareness Foundation.
Ray will be performing with The Basin City Big Band 20 piece orchestra, who will also perform classic big band swing from the 50's to the 90's and beyond.
