Favourite Picnic Spots | Bay of Islands
Sometimes the best way to enjoy a beautiful place is to find a quiet spot, spread out a picnic rug and simply stay awhile.

From peaceful riverside settings to sandy beaches and shady gardens, there are some lovely places around Kerikeri and the Bay of Islands to enjoy an unhurried afternoon.

A few of our favourites:

• Coopers Beach for a picnic beside the sea.
• Charlies Rock for a little adventure and a beautiful natural setting.
• Rainbow Falls for the sound of cascading water and a wander through the bush.
• Aroha Island for its peaceful coastal surroundings and abundant birdlife.

Did you know the inspiration for the Treghan name dates back more than 450 years?

Treghan takes its name from Tregrehan Estate in Cornwall, a remarkable historic estate and one of Cornwall's most celebrated gardens. Nestled near St Austell Bay, the estate has been cared for by the Tregrehan family for generations and is renowned for its beautiful gardens and botanical collections.

While our gardens in Kerikeri are a little smaller, we're proud of the connection and the inspiration it continues to provide.

One day we hope to visit the original Tregrehan Estate and walk the gardens that inspired the Treghan name.

There are good reasons to keep travelling north.

Ancient forests, extraordinary coastline, quiet beaches and hundreds of islands scattered across the Bay. A place rich in Māori culture and woven through with the history of Aotearoa New Zealand.

But perhaps what makes Northland special is the space to experience it all without rushing.

In 2025, National Geographic named Northland one of its 25 best places in the world to visit. Another very good reason to keep travelling north.

A little more room these school holidays

If you're thinking about heading north for the school holidays next weekend, we still have some availability at Treghan.

Our spacious villas give families plenty of room to spread out rather than living on top of one another.

You have your own private guesthouse, kitchen and living areas, two-bedroom, two-bathrooms, and breakfast provisions waiting for you, as well as gardens. And from Kerikeri, you're well placed for beaches, walks and days exploring the Bay of Islands and Far North.

𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁

Come to Northland for the beaches and landscapes and you may find yourself just as fascinated by its history.

Kerikeri is a particularly good place to start. Some of New Zealand’s earliest surviving European buildings and important places in the story of early Māori and Pākehā interaction are here, with many more within an easy drive.

Did you know that Kemp House in Kerikeri is New Zealand’s oldest surviving building, built in 1821–22? It still stands beside the Stone Store in the Kerikeri Basin, only a few minutes from Treghan.

Or that Māngungu Mission on the Hokianga Harbour was the site of the largest signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi? Around 3,000 people gathered there on 12 February 1840, when more than 70 rangatira signed.

Then there is Te Waimate Mission House, built in 1832 and New Zealand’s second-oldest surviving building. The mission was established by the Church Missionary Society in 1830 and became an important place of early interaction between Māori and Pākehā. Te Tiriti was signed there on 10 February 1840. Charles Darwin visited in 1835, describing his surprise at encountering an English-style farmhouse and cultivated fields in this part of New Zealand.

These are places you can still visit, with Kerikeri making a natural base for exploring them.

It’s one of the pleasures of staying a little longer. There is time to go beyond the obvious and discover some of the stories that shaped this part of New Zealand.
