Some of the best moments here aren't necessarily the ones you plan.

They're the long vineyard lunch that takes most of the afternoon. The beach you discover on the way somewhere else. An extra hour wandering around Russell. A morning on the water. Dinner somewhere you hadn't intended to find.

And sometimes it's simply coming back to your guesthouse, opening a bottle of wine and deciding you don't need to go anywhere else today.

There is plenty to see in the Bay of Islands, but you don't need to see it all at once.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁.

One of our favourite places to suggest our guests visit is also one of the closest to Treghan.

The historic Kerikeri Basin is home to two of New Zealand's oldest surviving buildings, the Stone Store and Kemp House, set beside the Kerikeri River basin.

From here, you can explore Kororipo Heritage Park and walk up to Kororipo Pā, once an important fortified settlement associated with Hongi Hika.

Across the river, Te Ahurea offers another perspective, with its reconstructed Māori village providing an insight into traditional Māori life and culture.

Add a riverside walk, explore the historic precinct and stop for lunch or coffee nearby at the Honey Cafe or Plough and Feather, and it's very easy to spend several hours here without feeling as though you're ticking attractions off a list.

It's one of those places that helps you understand a little more about where you are, with plenty to see.

And it's right here in Kerikeri.
