This summer, I had the privilege of hosting two elderly Japanese brothers at our accommodation. They were 79 and 72 years old, and despite not being able to speak much English, they embarked on a bold adventure—a month-long road trip across New Zealand. Their journey began in February 2025 when they stayed with us at Tailor-Made accommodation.
Arriving in New Zealand with only a notebook🗒️, pencil✏️, and cash, they faced the daunting task of arranging their accommodation and flights. Recognising their struggle, we stepped in to assist them. (It was their first time travelling outside little island country 🇯🇵🛫)
After their stay with us, I thought our paths had crossed for the last time. However, a month later, I was astonished to reunite with them in the car park at Lake Tekapo. They had transformed—sun-kissed, confident, and invigorated by their journey.
They shared that, approaching 80, they felt it was now or never to fulfil a dream they'd held since their youth. Despite concerns about appearing foolish, they pressed on, supported by the kindness of strangers who didn’t mock them but admired their courage.
Their gratitude towards the people of New Zealand was profound. They spoke of the assistance they received from fellow travellers and locals, who offered help without hesitation.
Their journey was chronicled in a notebook titled *New Zealand Journey*. They explained that while terms like ‘trip’ or ‘sightseeing’ could describe travel, this adventure was an extension of their lives—a ‘journey’ in every sense🧳
Their story serves as a reminder that age is no barrier to pursuing dreams. It taught me that challenges are not defined by age, but by the willingness to face them. And most importantly, it reaffirmed that kindness and support transcend generations and backgrounds.
Every guest who stays with us carries their own unique story, and if we can play a small part in their journey, we consider it a privilege🤲✨
