11th March 1901 was race day, and multitudes were expected to descend on Little River. It had been a fine and mild autumn, with the sun sparkling off the lake day after day. The train left Christchurch that morning beneath a clear blue sky, but as it approached the Peninsula, gloomy, black clouds began to darken the horizon, and the racegoers arrived in Little River to a torrential downpour. Not to be deterred by adversity, the races went ahead on an extremely heavy track. Blunderbuss was the horse of the day, but again, the real winner was Samuel Nutt, because most of the crowd spent the day hunkered down at the hotel, enjoying his hospitality. Fortunately, the rain failed to dampen the spirits of the gambling public, and the totalisators turned over Β£1,896 10/- (around $437,000, which is pretty good for a small town).
Whereas Samuel’s interest was in horses, his son, Ernest, inclined more towards killing things, specifically hares, and he liked killing them with dogs. Ernest was the honorary secretary of the Peninsula Coursing Club. Coursing is, of course, an ancient sport, once reserved entirely for the aristocracy. Peasants simply weren’t allowed to do it because, if they did, there’d be no hares left for the wealthy to kill. The sport involves matching two dogs to see which can catch a live hare first. Like many blood sports, it is now outlawed in most places, but as hares spread in numbers across the Peninsula during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, it became rather popular. Coursing was a family affair for the Nutts, with Dad contributing donations, Ernest as secretary, and fourth son, Thomas, acting as slipper. (A β€œslipper” in coursing operates the β€œslip”, or collars, which release the two dogs simultaneously once a hare has been released or spotted. He also ensures that the hare has a β€œfair” start, of between 70 and 90 metres.) It was all pretty adrenaline-fuelled stuff for all concerned, especially the hare, and the coursing club attracted a significant membership in the early twentieth century.

The dawn of the new century saw Nutt still in control of the Forsyth Arms, still vigorously advertising, still applying for conditional licences for events, and even agreeing to a further ten-year lease on the racecourse. He gave every appearance of a man determined to stay the distance. But he seemed to have now given up promoting his long-held dream of a railway siding by the hotel. In February Ernest was working with sheep in the yards β€œwhen one headstrong jumbuck cannoned against and knocked him over”. Young Ernest, sensing injury, hauled himself into his trap and drove himself home. With the leg not looking too flash, and being a staunch Kiwi bloke, Ernest decided to drive himself the thirty odd kilometres to visit Doctor Cooke in Lincoln. He arrived in what was described as a β€œhelpless” condition, with the knee dislocated, and a small bone fractured. With his knee re-located and the bone splinted, Ernest drove himself home again.
The war in South Africa was by now in full swing, and as often seemed to be the case, New Zealand had been first to put up its hand to participate, in this case two weeks before real hostilities began. Britain accepted the offer, but it was to be a kind of DIY arrangement, where men would supply their own equipment and horses, much as they had in feudal times. The New Zealand central government, having committed to the war, then farmed out responsibility for drumming up enthusiasm to local bodies. And so, Little River received telegrams from both the mayor of Christchurch and the acting Premier urging a display of patriotism. A committee was formed, of which Nutt was a part. Then, as committees do, that committee spawned sub-committees, which resolved to support the war effort by holding an athletics meeting in the afternoon, and lighting bonfires on hilltops and conducting a torchlight procession in the evening. As if that wasn’t enough to have the Boers quaking in their clogs, the day would be rounded off with a crescendo of fireworks. All this, it was thought, would engender a feeling of patriotism in the community, and no doubt persuade young men to take up arms and head for the veldt. The South African conflict was not particularly damaging to New Zealand, however, and of the more than six and a half thousand troops who volunteered, there were a mere 230 casualties – pretty good for a time when human (and horse) lives were the most expendable commodities in war. And only 71 of those casualties resulted from enemy fire, the rest succumbing to disease or accident. Trooper Reynolds was one such example. He returned to Little River in mid-1901, and was rewarded with a social in his honour, where he was presented with a purse of sovereigns. So affected was he by the fever he had acquired that he was unable to speak, and Thomas Nutt was obliged to do so on his behalf.
