Stay indoors where possible. Stay safe everyone 🙏
🚧 Road Closures - Severe Weather Update
As of Friday afternoon, this post is outdated. Please see our most recent updates on our page.
5:40pm update: Marine Drive is closing within the next 10 minutes due to unsafe conditions on the road.
📍 Port Road update
Port Road will be re-opened at 3:30pm 🕞 to allow people to go home. The road will then be closed at 6:00pm ⛔ in line with Marine Drive. This closure is due to high tide and unsafe conditions on that road.
📍 Marine Drive
Marine Drive currently has a one-lane Stop-Go section in Mahina Bay to allow contractors to work on making the road safe.
From approximately 5:45pm the road is closed for travel in both directions ⛔, except for emergency vehicles, for approximately 4 hours (until at least 10pm) due to the expected unsafe conditions at this time, being 2 hours either side of high tide.
The closure will be in place from the point after Howard Road joins Marine Drive and the Bus Stop at Wellesley School.
⏳ These times may shift due to public safety and priority. The crew will reassess the road and it will be opened when safe to do so.
⚠️ We encourage people to avoid unnecessary travel and plan around this closure.
📍 Wainuiomata Hill Road
A slip has occurred on Wainuiomata Hill Road due to extreme weather conditions.
🚧 Traffic management has been installed for contractors to work on the slip site to make the road safe, once safe for contractors to do so.
❌ The Traffic is currently down to 1 lane in each direction between the lookout and the base of the hill on the Wainuiomata side.
The normal layout of 2 lanes in each direction is operating on the Lower Hutt side of the hill.
The lane closure will remain in place until the risk of further slips has been mitigated.
⛔ Please avoid any unnecessary travel and expect delays when travelling through this area.
We are advising people to:
🏠 Stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel.
🗺️ If you need to travel this afternoon/evening, plan ahead as strong winds can make driving hazardous.
🌊 Take special care on coastal roads and properties as there may be debris and large swells.
🕕 On 2 hours either side of high tide this evening (6-8-10pm) may see some issues along South Coast and Owhiro Bay area.
💨 Severe wind gusts like these will damage trees, powerlines ⚡ and unsecured structures, and can cause threat to life from flying items and falling trees.
🏚️ Destructive winds can cause widespread damage including powerlines and roofs, with dangerous driving conditions and significant disruption to transport and power supply.
⚡ Some areas are experiencing power outages; power companies are prepared and responding.
🪑 Secure any outdoor items if safe to do so, like wheelie bins, trampolines and outdoor furniture that may blow around.
🐶 Bring pets indoors, if possible, ensure livestock 🐄 have access to sheltered areas, and tie down any loose items on farm.
Report any debris on the road to your local councils.
If life is at risk, call 111 🚨
