Last Sunday 18 February saw the first wave of Tour Aotearoa riders set off for one of the world’s great bike-packing trips. Stretching 3,000km from Cape Reinga to Bluff it follows a combination of cycle trails, tracks, paths and lanes connected by the most enjoyable country roads available. We wish the Brevet participants a safe and memorable journey and look forward to seeing you on the Hauraki Rail Trail! TRAIL UPDATE: Section E - Wairere Falls Track Closure
DATE: 7 February 2024
ISSUE: Wairere Falls Track closure from the 30th January 2024. The Department of Conservation will be upgrading multiple structures along the Wairere Falls Track. Ōkauia hot springs are located on Ōkauia Spring Road, 6km from Matamata and sits between the Matamata golf Club and the Waihou river. The pools were first discovered by J.C. Firth on his land in 1886. The first manager of Ōkauia thermal pools was Captain Henry Tizard who also built the first three concrete pools and created the camping grounds.
One of the private pools, Ramaroa, according to Māori legend, got it’s name after the canoe that carried a Māori chief and his wife along the Waihou River. Legend has it that the two had been warned to be through the Ōkauia area before dusk or risk being turned to stone but when the chief became cold along the way they decided to stop. The Māori chief ordered his wife to light a fire for warmth. Dusk came and sure enough they were petrified. The pool, so it is said, gets its heat from the ever burning fire beneath the petrified bow of the canoe, Ramaroa.
Today the pools are known as Opal Hot Springs Holiday Park. Outdoors there is a 25m heated lane pool plus 2 hot mineral pools. A private indoor thermally heated mineral spa can be booked as well as the outdoor private Ramaroa pool, which has its own setting down by the river surrounded by native ferns and bamboo. The complex also includes holiday accommodation and is open 364 days a year from 9am - 9pm.

We were invited to the accommodation providers night at Hobbiton last week.
We’ve been to Hobbiton several times but this new attraction is on another level altogether!
The details & workmanship is amazing.
Most of the people who worked on the project are New Zealanders.
Come stay with us and then head out there.
It’s so easy to book on line www.towerroadmotel.co.nz or give us a call 027 869 3773 and we’ll be happy to help.
Just a few pics.
