Frankie & Hugh's, a locally run B&B, is situated in Ohakune, New Zealand. This popular mountain town is 20 minutes drive from Turoa (ski field) on Mount Ruapehu. A beautiful mountain stream runs through the B&B gardens, and you can often hear the calls of native birds. The bedrooms have quality linen and the inviting fire in the living room is warm and welcoming. The kitchen is well-appointed to c

ater for your needs. There are many stunning alpine walks on the slopes of the mountain. From Ohakune you can cycle the iconic Old Coach Road trail (or walk it) from the ‘Mountain to the Sea’ – by crossing through the bush of Tongariro National Park, on to the Bridge to Nowhere and then terminating at the Whanganui River. Choose to jet boat or kayak down the Whanganui River to Pipiriki and then cycle the river road to Whanganui to reach the ocean. Bicycle hire is available within a short walk of this property, and also close by is the Waimarino Golf Course that is well worth a round or two. Frankie and Hugh’s comfortably sleeps groups of six or fewer, or families.

Growing up on a dairy farm in Ohakune, family holidays were few and far between. But every May, when the cows were dry before calving, we packed up and spent a magical week in Matamata.

Those annual trips filled my childhood with happy memories—and perhaps they’re the reason I’ve found my way back here.

Now, the next chapter is about to begin. In just 10 days, Frankie & Hugh’s reopens in the stunning Matamata countryside. We can’t wait to welcome you…🌿
