4 Motel Units (1 with access facilities), Self-Contained Units, Kitchen Cabins, Standard Cabins, 80 Powered/Non-Powered Sites. Barbecue and Picnic Areas, Hire items available, 18-hole golf course adjacent. Two hot mineral outdoor public pools, one freshwater 25m Lap Pool, and one outdoor hot mineral private pool (temperatures from 27 to 40 degrees C). Pets - while we are a pet friendly holiday park, pets are permitted ONLY on powered and non-powered sites by prior arrangement. Pets are NOT permitted into guest accommodation.

There’s a lot more to this place than just a holiday park… ♨️

This was our second stay at Opal Hot Springs & Holiday Park, just outside Matamata, and once again it made the perfect base for exploring this beautiful part of the Waikato including another visit to Hobbiton Movie Set! 🌿🧙‍♂️

But something we love about this place is the history beneath it.

Originally known as Ōkauia Thermal Springs, springs were developed for bathing in the late 1800s, and by the 1920s, people were already travelling here to camp and soak in the warm waters. ♨️

More than a century later, you can still camp here and enjoy those naturally heated mineral waters. Pretty bloody cool when you think about it!

It was also brilliant to see how much progress has been made on the renovations since our last stay. The place is really starting to take shape and we can’t wait to come back next year and see the completed transformation.

Farewell Kevin 🌿

We’re saying goodbye to Kevin, who has been a valued part of the team here at Opal Hot Springs, as he heads off to focus on his own business, Tiddy’s Garden Services.

Kevin has played a big part in looking after our gardens and grounds and has been involved in many of the improvements happening around Opal. He’s hardworking, reliable and genuinely cares about doing a job properly.

While we’re sad to lose him from the team, we’re really pleased to see him taking the next step with his own business.

If you’re looking for someone to help with your lawns, hedges, gardens or general outdoor maintenance, we can absolutely recommend giving Kevin a call. We’ve seen firsthand the quality of his work and the care he puts into it, and we know he’ll do a great job for his customers.

Thanks for everything you’ve done for Opal, Kevin. We wish you all the best with Tiddy’s Garden Services — we’re sure you’ll be kept very busy! 🌱💚

🌿 Our new Family Cabin is officially open!

We’re very excited to have welcomed our first guests into our brand-new Family Cabin at Opal Hot Springs & Holiday Park — and the feedback so far has been fantastic!

Designed with families in mind, the cabin is fully self-contained and features a queen bedroom, separate bunk room, bathroom, kitchenette and comfortable living space — giving families a little more room to relax and enjoy their stay.

We’ve kept the interior fresh and simple, with warm timber features and touches of green that tie in beautifully with our surroundings. 🌿

A huge thank you to our fantastic local trades who helped bring another Opal project to life. Once again, the workmanship has been top quality, the project was delivered on time and within budget, and we couldn’t be happier with the finished result. We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a great group of local people and businesses working alongside us as we continue to develop Opal. 👏

It’s been great seeing the cabin finally come together and, even better, hearing how much our first guests have enjoyed staying in it.

Bookings are now open! Come and be one of the first families to stay in our newest cabin. 💚

💦 A different kind of swimming lesson this weekend! 🚤

Our swimmers had a very special lesson at Opal over the weekend, with a big focus on water safety and confidence.

The kids learned some really important skills, including what to do if they unexpectedly end up in the water, practicing falling from a boat, floating safely on their backs, and staying calm and confident in the water.

It was such a fun way to learn skills that could one day make a very big difference – and judging by the smiles, the kids loved every minute of it!

We absolutely love having Aquatic Academy out here at Opal and seeing our pools used to help our local kids become safer, stronger and more confident around water. 💙

✨ What a transformation!

While we may still be waiting on our new amenities block, we’re very excited to share that our fully renovated ablution block is now open! 🙌

This space has had a complete transformation — and looking back at the before photos, it’s hard to believe it’s the same building!

The renovation includes new toilets and partitions, new vanities and basins, fresh wall and ceiling linings, new lighting and a complete refresh throughout. The result is a much brighter, cleaner and more modern space for our guests to enjoy.

A huge thank you to our local tradies who have done it again. We’re incredibly grateful to have such a reliable group of local businesses working alongside us as we continue to improve Opal. 💚

And to our guests, residents and community — thank you so much for your patience while all of this work has been happening. We know there has been disruption, and with delays to our new amenities building there’s still a little way to go, but we really appreciate your understanding.

One more project ticked off — and another big step forward for Opal! 🌿

📢 Planned Pool Maintenance – 2–16 November 2026

At Opal Hot Springs, we're always looking for ways to keep our facilities in great condition for our guests.

To ensure our public pools continue to provide the best possible experience, we'll be undertaking a full repaint from 2–16 November 2026.

During this time, our public pools will be temporarily closed while the new coating is applied and allowed to fully cure.

The good news is that the rest of Opal Hot Springs will remain open as usual, including:
🏡 Accommodation
🛝 Playground and park facilities
🛍️ Reception and shop
🛁 Private pools (bookings essential)

If you're planning a stay during this period, please keep the temporary pool closure in mind. If you have any questions about an existing or future booking, our team is always happy to help.

Some of our older cabins are in need of a little love, so we’ve started on the next transformation!

The feedback from our cabin upgrade last year was fantastic, but there was one limitation — it only had one bed. So this time, we’re going a little bigger…

Introducing our new Family Cabin! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

This self-contained cabin will have everything you need for an easy, affordable family stay:
✨ One queen bedroom
✨ A small bunk room
✨ A modest private bathroom
✨ Your own kitchenette
✨ Plus a pull-out couch for those extra family members

It’ll be perfect for families or small groups who want an affordable place to stay while still having the convenience of their own kitchen and bathroom.

There’s a bit of work to do yet — as you can see! 🔨 — but we’re excited to bring another one of our older cabins back to life.
