She didn’t want to retire alone. So she built something different.

At 70 years old, Robyn Yerian from Texas took about $150,000 from her retirement savings and turned it into a tiny‑home village called The Bird’s Nest.

Set on about five acres in Cumby, Texas, The Bird’s Nest has 14 pads for tiny homes and a shared pavilion that serves as a communal kitchen and hangout spot. The area is green, quiet, and designed for privacy — but never isolation.

Today, around 11 women in their 60s, 70s, and 80s live there. Most are single, divorced, or widowed. Many live on fixed incomes.

Rent for the pad and hookups starts at about $450 a month. Affordable — but more importantly, connected.

Robyn imagined a place where older women could keep their independence without feeling alone. Residents call it “a college dorm for grown‑ups.” Everyone has their own home and routine — but friendship is always just a few steps away.

Mornings start with coffee under the pavilion. Meals are shared. Laughter carries across the gravel paths. When someone needs help, there’s a knock on the door instead of a bill.

And when life gets harder, they take care of each other — rides to appointments, recovery meals, daily check‑ins. No one disappears into quiet loneliness.

Finding the right land took persistence — tiny‑home communities often face zoning challenges — but Robyn’s vision worked. Hundreds of women have asked to join the waiting list.

Because The Bird’s Nest stands for something bigger than five acres of homes.
It says older women are craving community.

In a culture that often isolates seniors, especially single women, this little village offers another way — not assisted living, but shared living.
