An update on Tongariro Northern Circuit 👇🏽

ℹ️ Oturere Hut progress and timings ℹ️

Oturere Hut is looking great (check it out!), but we've had some unavoidable delays, so unfortunately it won't be open in time for the start of Great Walks season. Poor weather at critical times prevented contractors flying materials in to Oturere, delaying construction.

The hut and the campsite will now open for bookings from 18 December 2026.

Visitors with affected bookings will be emailed directly next week and given the opportunity to change their booking or receive a full refund.

🥾 Mangatepopo Track opening mid-December 🥾

We've made awesome progress repairing structural damage on Mangatepopo Track, which was impacted by fires in late 2025, and the track is on course for a summer reopening! We're stoked to have the circuit back as an option.

The track will reopen on 18 December, meaning visitors will be able to complete a full circuit this season.

Spring camping and tramping - Issue #252

20/09/2025

Meet Stew, our “Mountain Man” and owner of Adrift Tongariro.

Walking the Tongariro Crossing 3,000+ times doesn’t stop him finding something new in every step. From a life-changing moment high in the Andes to building this guiding team, he does things his way — exploring “no-exit” roads, savouring the snow seasons, and helping every guest fall in love with the wild just like he did.

Favourite moment with Stew? Watching an 82-year-old guest, with no English, complete both Tangariro and Ruapehu – sliding past the young ones in snow.

Tip from the Mountain Man: Slow and steady wins the race.
