Winter has certainly made its entrance in Nelson this year. 🌧️

The rain’s been steady, the mornings a little darker, and the sound of it tapping on the windows has become part of the season already.

While we’re embracing the cosy side of winter, we’re also thinking of everyone in our community who has been affected by the recent weather and flooding. We hope you’re staying safe and looking after one another during this time. 💛

There’s something about these slower, wetter days that makes the simple things feel even better, warm coffees, cosy catch-ups, beach walks between the showers, and retreating somewhere comfortable at the end of the day.

And if there’s one thing locals know, it’s that after the rain often comes those beautiful crisp Nelson winter days we all love. ☀️

This before-and-after tells the story of a space that has quietly done its job for years, welcoming every kind of traveller through our doors in Sunny Nelson. The “before” was familiar and functional, where late check-ins, early departures, family getaways, business trips, and long-awaited holidays all began.

Nelson’s much-loved Founders Book Fair returns this King’s Birthday Weekend, offering thousands of quality pre-loved books and hidden gems ready to be rediscovered.

First held in 1988 by Amy Brooke and Shona Banks, the fair was created to rescue unwanted books from landfill and raise funds for Founders Heritage Park. What began as a local initiative has grown into one of New Zealand’s largest book fairs, now supported by hundreds of volunteers each year.

It’s a true celebration of recycling, community, and the joy of reading, held over nine days and loved by book enthusiasts from all over.

While you’re there, explore more of the Park:
The Windmill Founders Store is open 7 days, 10am–4.30pm, Founders Café is open Wednesday to Sunday, and a variety of local artisans and businesses help bring the Park to life.
