Here's some info about the Awakino Gorge and why they may have to close it, particularly over these next few winter months.
On Tuesday (2 June) we closed SH3 through Awakino Gorge for several hours after rainfall exceeded a threshold in the Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP). That meant we needed to close the road and complete a geotechnical assessment before it could safely reopen.
The TARP is in place for the major slip site at Awakino Gorge. It helps us respond early if conditions at that site change. Monitoring includes rainfall and on-site visual checks, and if safety thresholds are reached, we may need to change access or close the road at short notice to keep people safe.
That can mean the road closes even if nothing obvious has changed for people driving through. At this time of year, winter weather can quickly affect conditions in the gorge. More rain could mean there are times we need to close the road again, including at short notice.
If bad weather is expected, even if the road is open, only travel through Awakino Gorge if your journey is necessary. SH3 through the gorge remains an active worksite and this is not yet a return to normal driving conditions.
