The Pouākai Tarn 🏔.
There are three ways to get here ...
1️⃣ The Pouākai Circuit is a two-three day hike overnighting in a doc hut.
Starting at the Egmont National Park Visitor Centre, the circuit takes you through the fragile Ahukawakawa Swamp, golden tussocks, summer flowers with a side trip to the Stony River’s Bells Falls. Sleep in Holly Hut, and the Pouākai Hut.
2️⃣ The Pouākai Crossing is a one-day hike that takes in the highlights of the longer two to three-day tramp. The Pouākai Crossing starts at North Egmont and finishes at Mangorei Road, so transport between points will need to be arranged (shuttle services available). To complete the 18.4km track you will require a good level of fitness. December - April is the best time to go as conditions higher up can be icy and dangerous during winter months.
3️⃣ The Pouākai Hut walk can be done in 4-5 hours depending on your level of fitness, and how long you rest at the top. The hike begins at Mangorei Road, head up the boardwalk to the Pouākai Hut, from there it's a short flat 15-minute walk to the famous Pouākai Tarn. Return the same way.
