The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association Inc - NZMCA has entered into new long-term lease agreements with Kaipara District Council to manage the beachfront Kellys Bay Reserve and Glinks Gully campgrounds, on the Pouto peninsula in Northland.

We are aiming to open both campgrounds to the public on labour weekend, with improvements currently underway at both sites and a new website and online booking system ready to launch soon. NZMCA members will receive a discount on the standard campsite rates at both campgrounds under the CampSaver programme.

The campgrounds will have onsite volunteer hosts for at least the extended summer period and will be open to the general public to pre-book sites on a first-come-first-served basis. The NZMCA have committed to ensure both campgrounds are available to the public for at least 16 weeks per year over the summer period while using all reasonable endeavours to keep them open to the public for the entire year.

Pouto Camping will be the primary page for updates on both campgrounds moving forward and we encourage you to follow this page for information on when the booking system is ready.

🏕️ A new lease of life for campers in Kaipara 🏕️

ICYMI, Kaipara District Council has secured new managers for Glinks Gully and Kellys Bay campgrounds, in time for the summer season.
The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) will now manage both campgrounds following a competitive process that saw interest from all over the country. Under the new lease, both campgrounds will be available for public bookings at least 16 weeks of every year, with NZMCA promising more spots where possible.

With the new lease agreement in place, freedom camping at the Glinks Gully and Kellys Bay sites is no longer be available.

NZMCA expects to have both campgrounds operating by Labour weekend. Bookings and other enquiries around campground operation should be made directly to NZMCA. Please note that NZMCA will also manage and operate this Glinks Gully campground FB page.

Freedom camping in non-self contained vehicles is prohibited in Kaipara. If you don't have a self-contained vehicle, please contact one of the campgrounds listed on the Kaipara District Council website to book your spot and use their facilities.

Expressions of interest to manage and operate the Kellys Bay and Glinks Gully campgrounds have now closed. Staff are now assessing the expressions of interest received and will present a recommendation on how the campgrounds can be managed in future to Elected Members in early 2024.

No kitchen or laundry facilities, hot water, or powered sites are available, but toilets will be open and serviced regularly.

Our freedom camping officers will be out and about across the district this summer offering education about sustainable freedom camping, and checking people are following the rules.

Glinks Gully campers will already know that the campground has not reopened after winter like it normally does. The managers have left and currently, no bookings are being accepted for this summer. We’re sorry for the inconvenience, especially for those who may have this as their regular camping spot.

With both this and the closure of Kellys Bay campground, Kaipara District Council is now looking at how they manage these spaces for the future. To see how much interest there might be from members of the public to manage and operate Kellys Bay and Glinks Gully campgrounds, Council is calling for expressions of interest.

Perhaps you’re a people person, who likes a relaxed lifestyle, loves the feeling of sand under your feet and thinks managing and operating a couple of small boutique campgrounds is right up your alley!
