Hi everyone, okay so the camp is looking pretty good, well, the A,B.C,D and E sites are fairly dry. Thank Goodness we did the drains in October last year and they have worked. So another day like today, sunny 29 degrees and we will be dry. The F and G sites are very wet. In fact the G sites are unusable at the moment. The Flash Flood last Sunday night caused to major slips on the hill of the farm at the back of the camp and the slips fell into the quarry and then into the dam down there. That dam burst its sides and flowed straight into the G sites, which caused major damage to not only the grounds but also to our poor campers' tents, etc.
However, the rest of the camp is fine, the cleanup has been done, all the facilities are working. BUT, the roads are closed. There is a major slip on Russell Road up by6 the Gallery and it has a approximately 800-ton Rock in the center of the road, plus half the hill and heaps of trees etc., the workers were telling me this could take anywhere between 1 to 2 months to repair. So the only way into the camp at the moment is thru Kaikanui Road. You take the Whananaki turnoff, follow that road until you get to Pigs Head Road, turn into Pigs Head road and then right into Kaikanui Road, this will bring you out past the slip and down to the camp.
I fully understand if you can't make it this weekend and we are happy to reschedule your stay, for a later date.
For those that still want to come, we will be happy to see you, for those that can't, let us know and hopefully you can get here on another long weekend.
Our community got hit badly mainly with the Flash Flood on Sunday night and it has been extremely sad to see some of our neighbours, friends and community lose their homes, or their belongings or both. But this community is a wonderful one and we have seen so many pulling together to help each other. We have taken in some of our locals who have been evacuated from their homes, others are out there digging mud, cutting up trees to clear roads, helping out with removal of ruined furniture etc. I am very proud of the residents and community in Oakura and very grateful, i found this place 10 years ago and now call it home.
Anyway, hopefully we see you all soon. Until we do take care. Robynne
