UPDATE AS OF 6:49AM THURSDAY 22 JANUARY

Morena everyone, MetService New Zealand have now lifted the Red Heavy Rain Warning that was in place for the entire Bay of Plenty, including Rotorua.

If you're out and about this morning, please remember to keep safe.

------
UPDATE AS OF 8:41PM WEDNESDAY 21 JANUARY

Hi everyone, just want wanted to share the latest MetService New Zealand weather update with you all.

The Red Heavy Rain Warning remains in force for the Bay of Plenty region, including Rotorua until 8am tomorrow, Thursday 22 January.

Peak rainfall rates remain unchanged since the last forecast with a further 100mm to 140mm expected on top of what has already accumulated.

------
ORIGINAL POST AS OF 9:34AM WEDNESDAY 21 JANUARY
📢 Good morning everyone, MetService New Zealand has upgraded the Heavy Rain Warning for the Bay of Plenty (including Rotorua) to a Red Warning.

According to their forecast, we are likely to experience an intense period of rain today through to Thursday morning (approximately 9am).

Here’s what you need to know:
- Heavy rain, downpours and easterly gales are expected to affect many areas of the region.
- Expect a further 180 to 240mm of rain on top of what has already accumulated. Peak rates of 25 to 40mm/h in downpours from Wednesday evening.
- The rain and wind should ease on Thursday after the low crosses the country, but we will keep you updated with any changes.
- This weather can create dangerous river conditions, as well as significant flooding and slips.

In weather conditions like these, it’s important to know the risks and be prepared:
- Do not travel (unless essential or emergency) in and around the Bay as there may be slips, fallen trees or surface flooding on roads. Check NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi - Waikato & Bay of Plenty or your local council for any road closures.
- If you do need to drive, drive to the conditions – safety first for yourself and others – and don't drive through floodwaters.
- Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.
- Never try to walk, play, swim or drive in floodwater.
- Tie down or remove any loose items outside your home as these can become a risk in high winds.

As always, we will keep you updated, as will your local council. Keep an eye on their page and /or website.
