Marly's Cottage

Marly's Cottage Privately located on an acre of beautiful cottage gardens only a short walk from Otaki Beach, Marly's Cottage is currently undergoing restoration.

Marly's Cottage is a two bedroom cottage situated on an acre of cottage gardens only minutes from Otaki Beach. From the moment you first walk in the door of Marly's Cottage you are taken straight back to the 50's. You can almost feel time rapidly slowing to a stand still. To this day the cottage retains its original charm and character. From the wood panels in the dining room to the formica in the

kitchen, there is a real sense of originality about the place, just great to unwind from today's busy world. When you first walk in you enter the kitchen which leads to a dining room with French doors opening out on to a sunny north-east facing patio. This sun trap is a superb place to relax with your morning coffee or to sink a good cup of afternoon tea or glass of wine in the evenings. If you would prefer to stay indoors there is a spacious lounge that enjoys the afternoon sun. This room has seen many happy gatherings over the years. The master bedroom and second bedroom are located off the hall. Both these rooms are a good size. Off the hall the bathroom includes a hand basin, shower and toilet. There is also an additional separate toilet, shower and laundry off the porch that adjoins the kitchen. This is great for showering off sand after having spent time on the beach.

Dave's started work on the chimney so he can install a log burner. This old open fire over the years has been great to sit around, fantastic ambience, until the wind blows the wrong way and the whole cottage stinks of smoke! Dave has installed many of these fireplaces in the past.

On Christmas Day in the 1950s at Marly’s Cottage, the adults enjoyed a traditional roast dinner inside while the children—Cooper, Haggitt, and Young family members—were seated outside. To their disappointment, they were served stew instead of the roast.

Cooper Camp City happens every second year at Marly's Cottage. We missed 2022 because Mary (Mum) died. This year it was like the start of a new era, with a tug-o-war to add to the day of tennis, water fighting, talent quest and the sharing of food. Family reconnections and so much fun. We are very blessed to be part of a large awesome family.

I always wrote Granny Marley letters using the spelling 'Granny Marley'. I remember when David was making the Cottage sign, there was a lot of discussion around the correct spelling and it ended up being spelt 'Marly's Cottage'. I questioneded Mum about it again a few years ago and she was adamant it was Marly. She showed me a letter Granny Marly had written signing her name as Marly. I found this the other day, which some of you may recall, it hung on the dining room wall for years. It was a card to Anita. Anita Dobson & Co - Hibiscus Coast Real Estate

Call out to family, does anyone have anything else signed by Granny Marly or Granny Marley?

Making some progress. We decided it was either timber floors or timber walls, not both! Needless to say Marly's Cottage is so much brighter with the walls a lighter colour.

Under every ginormous tree, there's a ginormous root system. The Norfolk Pine didn't disapoint! Dave to the rescue, with Joe always handy when needed, especially in fixing chainsaw parts.

A momentous occasion. This Norfolk Pine was planted by Pamela Casey (Aunty Andy), when she was 4 years of age. It would have been planted in 1933, as Andy is turning 94 in a few days time. She planted it with her Grandmother Florence Young aka Granny Wogs. We have been told, it is the only part of the section Granny Wogs was allowed to garden in. Cousin Daniel Cooper from Habitat Tree Surgeons, along with his son Ivon and helper, cut down the tree on 12 May 2023. It was the day after cousin Devin and Bex got married, therefore there were many family members around to witness the tree come down. Almost all of Andy's descendants were there on the day.

The start of a whole new Era.

The sandpit that has always been a favourite space for the boys over the years. Perfect place to throw a few veges into when you are on the run. It's amazing how easy veges are to grow, unattended!
