📣 Market Update – Please Read

Just a reminder that there will be no Clutha Community Market this Saturday (14th March).

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing car park resealing, reduced stallholder availability, a poor weather forecast, and the season coming to an end, we’ve had to make the difficult decision not to go ahead with the market.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. This was originally planned to be the final weekly market of our spring–summer season, and we’re truly sorry that we weren’t able to make it work.

That said, we’re excited to share that we will be planning special markets throughout autumn, winter, and spring — likely on a monthly or six-weekly basis. Some of the dates we’re hoping to hold markets include:

📚 Annual Book Sale

These dates are still to be confirmed as we work through bookings and availability, but we’ll keep everyone updated as plans are finalised.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to our community and stallholders for supporting the Clutha Community Market in Balclutha throughout the season. It’s certainly been a challenging one, especially with us not being able to use the grass area as much as we normally would due to the weather and the ongoing car park works.

We’re already looking forward to next season’s weekly markets, when everything should be back up and running smoothly again. Fingers crossed for a beautiful spring and summer where we can spread out on the grass, enjoy some music in the sunshine, and fill the market with all the wonderful things you love

🌿🚗 ROAD TRIP READY: Tips for Exploring The Catlins 🌊
Planning a Catlins adventure this weekend? The best journeys here happen when you slow down, take the scenic route, and enjoy the roads less travelled.

Here are a few handy tips to help you make the most of your adventure 👇

⛽ Fuel Up Before You Go
Fuel stations are few and far between along the Southern Scenic Route, so it’s a good idea to start your trip with a full tank.
You can fill up in Dunedin, Balclutha, Owaka, Tokanui, Fortrose or Invercargill.
(Please note fuel is no longer available in Papatowai since February 2025)

📸 Charge Your Camera
From rugged coastlines and waterfalls to wildlife and sweeping views — there are plenty of photo moments waiting for you. Make sure your phone or camera is fully charged before you head out!

📍 Download Maps for Offline Use
Cell coverage can be limited in parts of the Catlins. A great trick is to download this Google Maps area in advance so you can still navigate while offline.

🌦 Pack for All Seasons
The Catlins weather can change quickly. A raincoat or umbrella in the car can be handy — although many bush walks have beautiful thick native forest canopy for shelter.

🦟 Sandfly Backup Plan
Our little sandfly friends sometimes like to join in the adventure. A small bottle of insect repellent in the glove box can be a lifesaver when they are out and about.
(Forgot yours? We’ve got a great range available in-store.)

🌊 Check Tide Times
If you’re planning to visit Cathedral Caves or enjoy some fishing along the coast, checking the tide times in advance can make all the difference.

🍔 Refuel Your Energy
After a day of exploring, stop in and recharge:
🔥 Kitchen cooking: 11am – 3:30pm
☕ Coffee, sandwiches & sweet treats: 10am – 4:30pm

🦭 Keep an Eye Out for Wildlife
You might spot sea lions, dolphins, seals, rare birds or even penguins while exploring the coastline. If you do, remember to keep a safe distance and enjoy the moment without disturbing them.

🐶 Travelling with Dogs?
We love our four-legged adventure buddies too! If you’re exploring the Catlins with your fur babies, just keep in mind that some beaches and nature areas have “no dogs” or “dogs on leash” rules to help protect our special wildlife.
Even keeping dogs on a lead when you first get onto the beach can give you time to assess the surroundings (especially for sea lions who can be camouflaged in the sand). Remember to give wildlife plenty of space — around 20m (about four car lengths) — as this helps ensure everyone, including your fur baby and the native sea lions and penguins, can enjoy the Catlins coast responsibly.
