Love seeing our community in action at Ashley Gorge Reserve
Today’s autumn leaf clean-up was made so much easier thanks to young Thomas Bay, who jumped in and gave us a hand.
Great to see that kind of spirit – well done Thomas, and thank you, it’s really appreciated by us all .

With the Easter holidays just about finished, we’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all our guests who stayed with us—we hope you had a fantastic time! A special thanks goes to Liz and Larry Waterhouse, who once again supported us as volunteers. Larry, thank you for driving the Easter Bunny around so he could distribute eggs—it brought so much joy. And as always, your singing was a hit! We’re grateful to everyone—thank you!

Exciting News from Ashley Gorge!

We are thrilled to announce that the new Ashley Gorge kiosk/ information center is officially complete—just in time for Christmas! This new kiosk will be a fantastic resource for the community, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Ashley Gorge and providing all the info you need about the walks, activities, and things to do around the area.

We couldn't have done this without the amazing support of our sponsors. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, with a special shout-out to the Robson family, Lay Asphalt, and Jack Robson, who led the construction of the project from start to finish. Once again, they were absolutely key to getting this done, and we truly appreciate their dedication and generosity.

In the early new year, we'll be completing the landscaping around the kiosk to make it an even more welcoming spot for everyone.

Ashley Gorge Information Kiosk Shelter Update

We’re excited to share that the Ashley Gorge Information Kiosk Shelter Project is well underway!

Last Wednesday, the concrete foundation was poured, marking another major step forward. Once again, our amazing friends at Lay Asphalt Contracting have gone above and beyond — generously donating their time, expertise, and hard work to make this happen.

It was a true family effort, with the Robson family all on site to get the job done. This time, the project was led by Jack Robson, the talented young builder of the family, alongside his mate Mitchell Frahm. Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and commitment were nothing short of outstanding.

A big thank you to Lay Asphalt Contracting and the entire Robson family for their generosity, community spirit, and continued support of the Ashley Gorge projects. Your dedication truly helps bring our shared vision for the reserve to life.

The Ashley Gorge Advisory Group is made up of volunteers who have dedicated thousands of hours creating and maintaining the beautiful walks and facilities that thousands of people enjoy every year.
Of late, we have been forced to deal with senseless vandalism — the donation box has been damaged, seats destroyed, and rubbish left scattered across the reserve.

This is unacceptable. Every dollar we raise through fundraising and every donation we receive is meant to go towards improving and developing Ashley Gorge area for the community — not fixing the destruction left by a small number of people who show no respect.
To those responsible: your actions undo the hard work of an entire community. They take away from families, visitors, and future generations who come here to enjoy this special place.

We will not let vandalism break the spirit of what has been built here, but we need everyone’s help. Please respect Ashley Gorge, call out destructive behaviour, and protect this reserve so it remains a safe, welcoming, and beautiful space for all.
If anyone witnessed suspicious activity of late or has information about this vandalism, we urge you to come forward. Your support can help us hold people accountable and prevent further damage.

Ashley Gorge Information Kiosk Update

We are delighted to share that the long-planned Information Kiosk project is now underway! What began as a concept draft has now taken shape thanks to the work of Kevin Dwyer from DLA Landscape Architecture.

The kiosk will be built on the site of the old pump shed. A big thank you to Craig and Kody Stubbs for generously donating their time to remove the shed and prepare the area.

In around two weeks, construction of the foundation will begin, with our great friends Thomas Robson and Paul Robson from Lay Asphalt Contracting once again donating their time, expertise, and sponsoring the construction of the foundation, as they have done on numerous other projects.

We are also grateful to Tom Hodgkinson from Rex Lamport Electrical for sponsoring all the electrical work.

Thanks to the Ashley Gorge Advisory Group and the generous support of local and North Canterbury businesses, and the Waimak council we have raised almost enough funds to complete this project.

We are now looking for a builder who would like to be part of this exciting community project by helping bring the kiosk structure to life at a discounted rate. If you, or someone you know, would like to contribute, we would be delighted to hear from you.

This kiosk will be a fantastic new asset for the reserve, providing a place to share both the history and current information about Ashley Gorge with all visitors.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed so far — your generosity is what makes projects like this possible.

Spring Preparations at Ashley Gorge Reserve

As we get ready to welcome spring, the Ashley Gorge Reserve Pavilion area needed some serious tree pruning and tree felling. This was no small task and required the expertise of professional arborists and commercial machinery to get it done safely and efficiently.

We are incredibly grateful to Sean Mackinnon, Operations Manager at ASPLUNDH Tree Work, who generously sponsored two days of professional support by making some of his best arborists available. Their skill and hard work were a huge help in completing this big job.

The project was also made possible thanks to the efforts of the Ashley Gorge Advisory Group and dedicated volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and dug deep to help out. A special thank you goes to Joanne Judson for providing a wonderful morning tea – her famous blueberry muffins and homemade scones kept everyone fueled for the day!

On behalf of Robert Judson (Chairman) and Mike Kwant (Waimakariri Parks Manager), we extend our heartfelt thanks to ASPLUNDH Tree Work, the Ashley Gorge Advisory Committee, and all the amazing volunteers. Without your support and generosity, the reserve wouldn’t be the beautiful place it is today.

Together, we are making Ashley Gorge a place for everyone to enjoy!
