Upmarket hostels in Auckland, Queenstown, Paihia (Bay of Islands), & Taupō. Your home away from home. Our staff are fun, friendly and laid-back.
Haka Lodge is the brainchild of Ryan Sanders, owner and operator of Haka Tourism Group. Haka Lodge’s vision is simple; to provide an upmarket backpackers lodge, all the while costing no more than a normal hostel. To do this, we have installed modern facilities in all of our hostels and keep them to a very high standard. Our Paihia and Auckland lodges feature modern kitchens, living spaces and more
. Our Queenstown and Taupō lodges have a full-sized kitchen, modern bathrooms and plenty of living space. Each of our hostels are close to the CBD and within easy access to public transport. Plus, each of our hostels features great bonuses like unlimited free WiFi. We aren’t owned by a big corporate company; we are 100% Kiwi and New Zealand owned. We love our country and are passionate about sharing it with you so come and let us show you around. At Haka Lodge, we are all about creating an upmarket experience! We have spacious, modern facilities and warm, comfortable rooms with cosy beds for a great night’s sleep. But being upmarket doesn’t mean we are stuffy – all of our lodges have a fun, relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. You won’t find any grumpy staff here; we love our jobs and love sharing New Zealand with you. Our hostels reflect our heritage which we are very proud of. Each of our hostels features awesome locations and stunning scenery: our Paihia hostel has the best view in town over the Bay of Islands looking towards Russell; our Queenstown hostel looks right out to the mountains and the gondola; whilst our Auckland properties are located in one of the coolest neighbourhoods in New Zealand – on Karangahape Road. For the ultimate New Zealand experience, come stay with us.

Happy Interntional Womens Day
Happy International Women's Day! 🌹
On this special day, we would like to honour Whina Cooper, born Hōhepine (Josephine) Te Wake at Te Karaka in Northland on 9 December 1895. She was a revered kuia (Māori elder) who dedicated her life to advancing the status of Māori women and defending the rights of her people. At the age of 79, she led the Māori land march in 1975 from Te Hapua to Wellington over a distance of 1,100 kilometres (680 mi).
Whina played a key role model for NZ with regards to breaking gender boundaries, championing the rights of Māori, and fighting for the land - all the while staying true to her heart and her beliefs. Her widespread influence and nationally recognised contributions earned her awards from the British and New Zealand Royal Honours Systems as well as recognition from her own people, who gave her the title ""Mother of the Nation"" (Te Whaea o te Motu). She is the focus of last year's Whina movie which is worth a watch.
So calling all wahine (women), to channel your inner Whina today (men too!) ❤️

The Story of Taupo, a must-see North Island destination.
Māori story of the week: The Legend of the Creation of Lake Taupō
While searching for a suitable place to settle, Ngātoro-i-rangi (Ngātoro) and his followers climbed to the summit of Mount Tauhara (now backdrop to the Taupō township) where a great dust bowl lay before him.
Ngātoro-i-rangi, wanting to promote growth in this infertile area, uprooted a totara tree from the mountainside and hurled it into the dust bowl. The west wind caused him to miss his mark and, striking a hard bank, the tree bounced off and landed upside down. Its branches pierced the earth and fresh water welled up to form Taupō Moana – "The sea of Taupō". This tree is said to still be visible under the water about 70 metres off the shore at Wharewaka Point.
After a thanksgiving service at the shores of the newly created lake, Ngātoro-i-rangi then plucked strands from his cloak and threw them into the water where they became the native fish of the lake. One of these turned into an eel but after wriggling away a short distance it died. There are still no eels in the lake to the present day.
