There’s a different kind of beauty in the Sounds at this time of year.

Cool air. Still water. Mist hanging low over the hills. And that wonderful winter quiet where it feels as though the whole bay has yet to wake up.

Portage may be taking its seasonal break, but the Marlborough Sounds certainly aren’t.

This is winter here - a little wilder, a lot quieter, and every bit as beautiful 🥰

Did you know the story behind the name?

The name 'Portage' comes from the 1800s, when settlers hauled their boats over the narrow saddle of land between Kenepuru and Queen Charlotte Sounds rather than sail the long way around. It's a name that's basically a stubborn shortcut turned into a place.

Decades later, the resort still sits on that same story of arrival and welcome. we look forward to welcoming locals and visitors back in spring 2026.
