🌊 UPDATE @ 4.30PM: SIGNIFICANT WAVE EVENT 🌊
📍 Port Waikato
📍 Mōkau
📍 Waikato region west coast

The forecast swell event (high energy waves) has caused coastal erosion and inundation over today’s 2pm high tide as a result of swell wave height likely to have been more than 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres.

We have reports of possibly 1 metre of erosion into the sand push-up buffer along Sunset Beach at Port Waikato. At the motor camp in Mōkau, in the region’s far south, erosion of possibly 2 metres has occurred. Other areas along the region’s west coast may also have experienced erosion and inundation impacts.

⚠️ ONGOING IMPACT ⚠️

🔸 While waves are forecast to decrease over the next few days, the wave event is still big – even by west coast standards – with swell over 4 metres and maximum wave height over 8 metres possible. This means further erosion is possible over the 3am and 3pm high tides on Sunday and maybe into Monday too.

🔸 Of note, the wave event is likely to have moved lots of sand around in the beach zone, which creates come uncertainty about how the waves will behave, potentially compounding the erosion impacts.

🔸 Inundation levels within harbour areas close to the entrances did increase today, and we may see similar levels over the next high tides along with ‘surges’ that could raise water levels for short periods.

🔸 As a result of conditions, some patrolled beaches may be closed by Surf Life Saving New Zealand to ensure the safety of water users. If living, camping or visiting west coast beaches over the next two days, please remain vigilant, act with caution and follow advice.
