Four nights at Lakestone Lodge in early September, and my husband and I have said to each other more than once since: that was the best stay we've ever had, anywhere.
What makes it is the people. Mike and Anna have built a team that is genuinely warm, not performing hospitality, just actually interested in you. Within a day we felt completely at home. Nothing was too much trouble, and everything was done quietly and without fuss.
The food deserves its own paragraph. Everything is made from scratch by the chef, and each day we'd talk through the evening's menu and tweak it to suit us. Dinners were sublime. Breakfast, also chef-made, was something we looked forward to every morning.
The rooms are spotless, well equipped, and the view from ours was extraordinary; Lake Pukaki changing colour through the day, and the mountains beyond it.
The absolute highlight was the stargazing. I have never seen so many stars in my life. The presenter was wonderfully knowledgeable and made the whole thing fascinating rather than just pretty. Life-changing is not too strong a word.
If you are deciding between Lakestone Lodge and somewhere else, stop deciding. Thank you Mike, Anna and the whole team, you gave us something we'll be talking about for years, we are recommending to everyone we know and we will definitely be returning.
