Excited to Discover Dolcetto in New Zealand! 🍷
Fun fact: *Dolcetto* actually means “little sweet one” in Italian—though don’t let the name fool you, this wine is not sweet! I was thrilled to find this charming grape being grown in New Zealand at Heron's Flight Vineyard in Matakana. Dolcetto is traditionally from Piedmont, Italy, where it’s known for its easy-drinking style, bursting with flavors of dark berries, plums, and a touch of almond.
The New Zealand version of Dolcetto? It’s like the grape took a refreshing vacation! While it retains the signature rich fruit notes, the cooler climate here gives it a delightful brightness and freshness, adding a fun twist to this Italian favorite. Heron's Flight’s 2019 Dolcetto is full of juicy dark fruit flavors, with soft tannins and a smooth finish—perfect for sipping on a warm day or pairing with a variety of dishes.
It’s always exciting to see winemakers experiment with grapes like Dolcetto, and Heron's Flight has done an incredible job capturing the spirit of this Italian classic while giving it a distinct New Zealand flair. If you’re a fan of easy-drinking reds with a bit of character, you’ve got to give this one a try!
