We were fortunate to have the opportunity to visit Hobbiton as part of the Bnb Association. Not our first visit but the first time going into a hobbit hole. Extraordinary attention to detail. Only an hour's drive from Rotorua, this place is a busy tourist site but well worth a visit even if you're not a LOTR/Hobbit fan.

We had the privilege of visiting the National Kiwi Hatchery this week. We got to watch staff weighing and candling eggs that had just been brought in. Then we saw newly hatched kiwi. Once the newborns reach a certain weight, they get moved to larger boxes and finally to a 'kiwi creche', which simulates an outdoor space. At a certain weight, they get put back into the wild. No photos of live eggs or kiwi allowed. Well worth a visit next time you're in Rotorua.

Such a beautiful day for a ride in Rotorua yesterday. First time in short sleeves for a long while. We did part of the Forest Loop, now designated a Great Ride of NZ, and then a few more challenging trails. There are over 300 kms of trails to choose from!

Encountered this weather gnome on the Forest Loop Trail yesterday. Then I saw another much larger gnome!
The Forest Loop is a grade 2 trail that does a 30-odd kilometer loop starting and finishing at the Waipa Mountain Bike Park. It has varied terrain and lovely views in parts. Well worth exploring.

We were privileged to go to Geyser by Night at Te Puia last night along with some of our B&B friends. The park is transformed at night with the clever use of lights to highlight the geothermal activity. Our 3 guides were outstanding, not only with their commentary but also songs. We even got steamed pudding, cooked in the boiling cooking pool, with custard! A must-do in Rotorua.

The charming Lake Okareka track, 15 mins drive from Rotorua. 5 km return - same trail there and back. Near the end take a dip at Silver Beach. Lots of birds to check out.

The charming Te Kotukutuku trail has opened again between the Blue and Green Lakes. To get there, you can take the Tangaroamihi trail from the Blue Lake carpark. Grade 2 - definitely challenging for me (Annie) with some uphill bits I didn't love but worth it for the views.

A very blue Tikitapu/Blue Lake today. It's an easy 5.5 km hike to circumnavigate, with beaches at various points if you want to cool off.
